Thanks for posting, my cigarette lighter isn't working, and I'd like to be able to hook up various chargers and things to it, so these pictures will be useful. But what's the item we're supposed to notice in the red circle on two of the pictures? I can't make it out.

Red circles? Probably you mean the switches for the control, that is another version used mainly if you do not have aircon (Klimatronik).
Just for your info:
We repaired my ashtray last year, the guide rail was broken. Here the info with pics from my shadetree mechanic buddy

No, in the last two pictures in from your first post someone added a red circle to the image to highlight some mark on the ashtray, but its hard to make out exactly what that is.

Now I see it.
Not sure, but maybe that is the opening for the ilumination. In case of the pre-facelft E32 ashtray that is the weak point. Exactly at that spot the rail broke, look here, and you can also see the red circle
