The M5 started with the Turbine wheels, then got Throwing stars [in 1993 I think], and then the very first M Parallels were factory fitted on the 1995 Euro 3.8L M5 and were forged and flat silver, not polished or mirror finished. They have different measurements than the e38 M-pars as well.

There are two factory 17-inch wheels for the E34 M5, M System I and M System II. Both are a two-piece wheel with a forged five-spoke center and a cast rim covered by an outer cover. The only difference is the design of the outer cover, "turbine" for the M System I and "throwing star" for the M System II. This outer cover is interchangeable between the two M System wheels, making updating form the earlier style to the later style an easy (and therefore common) procedure.

The 3.6-liter M5 is equipped with 235/45ZR17 tires on 8x17-inch M System I wheels. However, for the 1993 model year, North American-spec M5s use the M System II design in the same size. In addition, wider 255/40ZR17 rear tires on 9x17-inch M System I wheels were available as an option in some markets (not North America).

All 3.8-liter M5 sedans built before May, 1994 are equipped with 235/45ZR17 tires on 8x17-inch M System II wheels. Sedans equipped with the optional Nurburgring Package and all Tourings use wider 255/40ZR17 rear tires on 9x17-inch M System II wheels.

All M5s built after May, 1994 have 245/45ZR18 tires on all four corners with staggered M Parallel Spoke wheels measuring 8x18-inches in the front and 9x18-inches in the rear. Note: Though nearly identical in style to the 18-inch M Parallel Spoke wheels later used on the E38 7 Series, the E34 M5 wheels have a matte silver finish and a unique offset."

I believe that staggered rear Mpars from an e38 are 9.5 inches wide where the ones from the M5 are 9.0 inches wide.

I really appreciate this information. This is something I have wanted to know. I have seen multiple claims here that m pars never came on a e34 M5 and maybe one claim that they did.

I am not sure I could definitely tell the difference in finishes unless I had one of each right in front of me but I probably can get the difference between 9.0 and 9.5. :)

You can tell by the offset. The M5 pars have an offset of 20 front 22 rear. The e38s are 13 and 25 respectively.

The offset is the number of millimeters the rim is off set from the center of the wheel vertically. IOW, it is how much your wheels stick out or are tucked under the fender.

The offset will be stamped on the back of the wheel. Don't quote me on this but the offset is preceeded by the letters ET. So it'll be somthing like: ET13 or ET20.

I *think* the M pars from the M5 where a dull finish like stock basketweaves, juast an aluminum look. The Mpars from the e38 have a polished lip and face of the spokes. If yours have a polish then they're probably e38 mpars, which are more common.

From that description I would say you have the E38 wheels :D

you can measure the offset with a ruler or tapemeasure and a straight edge or even better a caliper a ruler or tape measure and straight edge
1) measure the overall width of the wheel with ruler tape or caliper
2) measure the distance from the wheel mounting surface(where the wheel bolts to the rusty nasty looking hub top hat using your ruler or tape) back to the inside edge of the straight edge which you are holding across the wheel rim
The difference between the second measurement and the oveall width/2 is the offset

Gayle, if you take off a wheel, you should see something like 8.5JJ18 ET13 cast into the hub.

BTW, ET is German for offset ("Einpressteife", or literally "pressed in depth").

I think the E38s are staggered as well. Look at the back of the wheel for the offset. I forget which ones are which, but I'm sure someone can answer.

EDIT: Next time before I post I will remember to read the rest of the thread!:D
