I have a problem with my a/c blower. It will work on setting 1 or setting 4. If I move from 4 (high) to 3 or 2 it basically drops down to speed 1. So, setting 1,2 & 3 are the same speed. 4 blows hard as it should.
Any ideas?

If you use the search engine on top with these words, you will find for example this

I believe its the blower resistor (http://www.autohausaz.com/search/productx.aspx?sid=1bfkd3450uqy5f45ppvrnlej&makeid=800003@BMW&modelid=1012431@540I&year=1994&cid=24@AC%20%26%20Heat%20-%20Climate%20Control&gid=6557@Blower%20Motor%20Resistor/Regulator). I have one that I'm going to put in when I dismantle my dash to do the heater core(hopefully this weekend!). I have the same symptoms as you do, so if this fixes the problem, I'll let you know.
Like shogun said, do a search and you'll find many posts with people with the same problem. Keep in mind that you have the resistor pack and not the sword which served the same purpose in earlier production years.

I've just replaced the blower resistor pack on my 525i, I had the same problem, works like a dream now.... just followed the instructions on the e34 website ( what a dream of a site that is!, just brilliant!).... just remember the difference between right and left hand drive cars.... I took out the panel from the drivers side as per instruction.... but mine is left hand drive... so should have taken out panel on passenger side of consul. It is a tight snap fit, but with the help of a screwdriver I manage to prise it out. Cost me £19 for the genuine bmw resistor pack and just my labour, putting it in the shop would have cost me £50 plus VAT... for just 10 mins work...grrrrrrrr.... definitely better to do this one yourself.
