Since I idle a ton on irc and take part in a lot of fansubber's channels, and noticing the chat link doesn't seem to work on the page, I went ahead and registered bimmer-info on rizon if anyone wants to use that as a live-chat source. This was really successful on another enthusiast board I was a part of and we actually set up one day a week (say 8-10pm on Sundays) where everyone got together rather than playing thread tag. Anyway to anyone who's new to irc you can get the client at www.mirc.com

server is irc.rizon.net

channel is #bimmer-info (the pound has the be there)

Naturally I'll add chanserv ops to moderators and the like. Enjoy.. I may be on, but idling from time to time, so I'm not trying to be mean and ignore anyone :D

So far, Yiorgos has made it in. Chatting is definitely superior to thread tag and refresh. If a lot of people end up taking interest, we can poll for a get together day and time weekly to shoot the breeze. Looking forward to hearing from others.

about you Yiorgos but I'm won't be at my best at 4.00am chattting to the wide-awake folks on the US east coast. I only get up that early to watch the Yankees play:D

What does? if you're referring to the client software, it has a registration popup, but it really doesn't do anything if you close it :D

I run a custom script called Polaris SE, which was based off mirc and even though its functions are custom made, the pop up still comes every once in a while.

there's an irc client for macs too called Ircle. You can get it here : http://www.ircle.com/

For moderators and regulars getting ops, h-ops and voice, you'll have to register your nick used on the server. The command to walk you through that process is :

/msg nickserv help register (this process only takes a few minutes and irc doesn't spam mail after the confirmation)

After registering, the first time you "identify" (which is like logging in your registered name) it will +r (identify) you automatically. Afterwards you'll have to do it manually with command :

/msg nickserv identify *your password*

The reason identifying will be important is so I can set the channel limitations to registered users only and not spammers with porn or whatever else, but for a while I'll leave it open until the majority of people are registered and in. Hopefully we can poll a day and time once a week to get together for a mass chat session or something. Any other questions, feel free to shoot and I'll try to answer them :D

I'm sure that HDhandyman was joking, but that stuff about Mac users not having anything to do or any software to use is rubbish.

I know because I am using a Mac right now.

There are a few chat clients around for Macs, ircle is not bad, there is Snak, Colloquy or what I use, X-Chat Aqua, which does a very decent job.

You can set up X-Chat to auto-identify yourself, that way you don't have to send /msg's to nickserv each time you connect to identify yourself.

Best of all, it's free. No nag screens like stupid mIRC :D

I'm in Australia, so it'd be the other way around for me -- when it's "normal" time I'd be hitting the z's, hopefully I might be able to catch the evening though.

We had a max of 6 people today, and I've requested a sticky so others can see the topic invite easily. If anyone is having trouble getting setup or needs help with commands to make it to the room, feel free to ask and I can help for the most part and Viorgos can help with mac-users. I know polls aren't exactly popular, but if a lot of people being to utilize live chatting we can poll a day and time to meet weekly. The software should be freeware and there isn't any residual costs to use the clients or software. I should also mention that I use the name "Tenki-kun" in that room since I'm involved with fansub rooms on the same server. All are welcome to hop in and say hi or ask questions in real-time.

I doubt there'd be many Mac users, but for those who are using a Mac and are having trouble, feel free to contact me.

I don't know much, if anything, about OS9 or lower, so Macs from 2001 and later should be OK (running OSX).

It should be stressed again that chatting on IRC is completely free. Some applications used to chat on an IRC network are shareware or require payment after 30 days, however no matter what computer you are using, there are always free alternatives that can be used to connect and chat on.

Haven't seen a mod lately... bump for sticky and exposure. C'mon guys, we don't bite and there's no power-trip kind of people so far. Everyone's been friendly and the chat hasn't been stuck on just E34 stuff. The room usually becomes busier in the evening hours (say around 8pm : GMT -6). Waiting to have about 15-20 people before choosing a set day/time for the weekly get-together chat. My nick is "Tenki-Kun" in room and I idle a lot since I take part in about 34 other rooms on rizon, but I check in the evenings for activity. May suggest to have the http irc script linked on the main page instead of the current non-working one for those that are unfamiliar with the stand-alone client.

Don't be afraid to ask for how-to's if you want to use the stand alone. A few of the commands can be a little cumbersome to the novice, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. Yiorgos mentioned that his program for macs do most of the commands for him so I'll start looking for a script for PC users to do the same if that'll help.

Well I keep telling Snakeyes to get off that damn Rizon and go to EFnet or even, *cringe* DALnet stuff. Shouldnt have to jump thru that many hoops just to chat.

I use Xircon with the Kano script for my PC and use Pocket IRC for my phone. LUBB those programs best things are always free :)

i am obviuosly a luddite
i found it (http://www.rizon.net/index.php) I think
but i cant see where to register or how to find #bimmer info
i am getting closer!
downloaded mIRC
now how do i find you guys

I am a chat newbie
The old chat thing was easy, just click the link type a name and away...
its broken now tho:(

You do not need to register your nickname to type.

All you need to do is download mIRC (www.mirc.com), install it on your machine and run it.

mIRC will ask you a few questions in a wizard kind of thing, click through those and write what you can/want. After all that you should be left with a screen that has a textbox at the bottom.

In that textbox, type:

/server irc.rizon.net

After a little while all this text will scroll by, once all the text has stopped scrolling, type the following:

/join #bimmer-info

You should see us sitting there doing nothing then :D

no problem. if you downloaded the client already, you'll see several buttons at the top right under "file, tools, dcc....etc etc"

The second button on the left is "General Options" click on that. If this is your first time using irc, you can just hit the delete button on the right of the first menu that came up. This will eventually clear the entire server list to lower the confusion of connecting to the wrong server by accident.

Next hit the "add" button that same right hand side and a small box should appear. Picture provided for ease of instruction here.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l273/Tenki-Kun/step1.jpg

After that step, you can "connect to server" If you closed the general options button, that's okay. Hit the lightning bolt looking button under "File" and it will begin to connect to server. Some programs will automatically open the "channels" folder after they connect to the server. If your client doesn't do that, click the 3rd button in the row (the one next to the general options button). If you hover the mouse over the button without clicking on it, it will eventually tell you what button it is (all the buttons actually, wherever you hover the mouse over). This is the channels button. Picture provided for simplicity.

That should just about cover it. If you need more clarification let me know. Also I'll try to put in a how-to identify if needed, but one can easily learn that by using the command "/msg nickserv help register" and the server's help file should be pretty understandable.

Behind a firewall Paul?

You may need to forward some ports, or connect via HTTP sockets.

Another shameless plug. Several people in Australia log in, and several from the states, so there's probably a little blackout time for people in Europe for the time being. The room that never sleeps was a neat idea but it appears that not many here are familiar with irc idling so its a hit or miss to see who's on. Hopefully within the next week or so this thread could get a sticky and a poll for chat night.

Actually IRC is just about as old as DOS :D

Mines a little different because I use a custom script, but the options buttons in the pictures I provided should be identical to any version of mirc. If this is still too hard to configure, you could also connect using Trillian since someone in the room currently is getting on that way.

If it's any help to anyone - i got ChatZilla.. downloaded it, intslled it..
Went & had a look through the preferences/options ('cos i always do when i get new software! Only thing i did in there was to add JerseySi to a username box somewhere)
fired it up... Type /server irc.rizon.net then when it connects /join #bimmer-info :D
(and yes - i can use the search box on here too - it's not that hard - n00bs take note or something ;) :D )

Who was the guy that asked me in the channel if there was a black triangle on their parcel shelf?

At the time I told them that I didn't have one and didn't know what they're talking about, but reverse-parking my car about 2 minutes ago I spotted it in the mirror.

I wonder what it's for?

yes robs got it you plug the end of the seat belt in it belt must be adjusted just so that the belt stays flat aginst the seat back, either that or the loose belt must be hidden in behind the armrest.Love the inside out rear seat belts with the receivers hidden in the seat...so neat.Newbies in a bmw never find the seat belts
