OT: Anyone know where a good Toyota Lancruiser FJ-40 is?

Been looking around for a vintage Toyota Fj-40 to have some fun with, anyone know of one for sale. I'm in Ky, so preferebly relatively close but would look at any good ones, TIA Brian Clark

I have owned 2 of them. One with a Chevy 350, one with the stock motor. The chevy one was rough, the stock one was a solid 9. Where you live most of those are probably pretty rusty. Out here, you still see clean original ones. I bought the chevified one for around $1200, sold it for around $3000. It was a rusty good beater 4x4. I bought and sold the stock one for $5000. Today that truck could fetch $7k+. It was almost perfect. The prices on those things have gone through the roof. Those and old Broncos have become pretty sought after. If you don't care about stock, look for the 350. It was alot better to drive. The stock straight six kicks @$$ offroad, sucks on road. The 350 had balls for the road, and grunt for offroad. More recently, I wanted an old Bronco (pre 76) but I couldn't afford one. Even the beaters were too much $. So, I bought an IHC Scout II. A real sleeper. Everyone thinks you can't find parts which is a total myth that plays to a buyers advantage. Alot of parts are Chevy/Jeep/Ford/Chrysler x-overs. Scouts were built by a company that specializes in Dump Trucks, School Busses, and farm equipment.

....(as you pointed out), had heard parts were tough to come by. Oddly enough, I was also wondering about the Toyota's the other day, too. What are the chances??

All the "hard parts" are available. The difficult stuff is the resto parts like interior stuff, handles, outside mirrors... crap like that. The motor parts are available, the auto tranny is a Chrysler 727, manual trannys are dana something, my steering column is GM, the front and rear ends are dana 44's(even used on the new Jeep Rubicon), The xfer case is a dana something. The brake booster is ford or chevy. Also, International is technically still in business. Although, they sold the "Light Line" (Scouts and Pickups etc... ) to these guys:

That is a good vendor, with NOS and repop stuff.

Are you planning to daily drive it? I will tell you from experience, it aint no Audi or BMW on the hi-way. Be prepared for 65 mph and not much more. Most of those have stock 4.11 gears. I don't want to discourage you, they are awesome trucks. Just giving you the heads up.

NOOOO....avoid Cool Cruisers!!!! Those guys are not what they pretend to be. A friend bought a truck from them and it was all prettied up, but mechanically was a disaster. He had a long battle with them, but I think they finally took the truck back. They charged him top dollar for a new paint job and upholstery, but all the rest of the truck was a bucket of bolts. Maybe they changed their business practices, but I never trusted them.

FJ-40's command a premium. If you want a really nice one, the best trucks by far come from TLC in Van Nuys, CA www.tlc4x4.com . Jonathan and his gang do nice work. I bought an FJ-60 from them and it was a solid truck, with great mechanicals. Their full blown restorations are beautiful and proper. Almost too nice.

Do check with the TLCA for other vendors too and get in touch with your local chapter to find what memebers have trucks for sale. Scour the want ads etc.

Just do NOT buy one from Cool Cruisers!
