In considering the costs for respray and trim replacement, I'm trying to find out (without removing my own) how many grommets and 'clamps' are needed to redo all the upper and lower trim.
Upper trim:

The grommets and clamps are very inexpensive... it's all the trim that will cost you $500+
I will check my car if you'd like me to to get a better idea but if I remember correctly you need about 20 pieces for each side... right around $20 total
*winces* I'm prepared for the costs, should I choose the respray/kit route (re: http://www.bimmer.info/forum/showthread.php?t=25312). On that note, I have a few credits with BMA. Thanks for stepping up to the plate, Evan!
You're welcome.
I'm at the tail end of my restoration so I have a lot of info for you and anyone else who is thinking about doing a complete respray, shocks, springs, and steering.
If you're keeping the car, respray and replace the trim. You'll have a showroom piece. My paint and trim cost me about $3500. plus I spent hours removing and replacing trim pieces. Now I have an Oxford Green 540 that looks like I just picked it up with no miles.
I also replaced the bumper trim, grille trim... in fact, I replaced every piece of trim...
I have headlight grilles for your car.. buy them from me.
...including the chrome windows pieces on the door interior? ;) I just remember I only did two of the four :|
NB: I have headlight grill and all the trim on the outside OTHER than the ones above... mainly because I haven't been able to source them cheap enough to get in one shot before :|
respray and trim.. without question.
Ask yourself how fast you need to drive --
then ask yourself how great does your car need to look ---
that should help you decide
Well, it's not so much how fast I need to drive, but rather how fast do I want to enter that power band I would believe. I mean, a split second faster adds up to nearly 30 minutes more of pure driving enjoyment every year.
Joking, of course.
But anyway... so how many grommets and how many clips are we 'roughly' looking at for all the trim? At the very least, I'd replace all the upper door trim.
OHH! Which just reminds me. The kit actually replaces the lower door weather stripping so I don't have to think about that part.
the clips are 20 cents each.. buy 40 pieces. if you replace grilles, buy OEM... I'm having a hell of a time trying to get aftermarket grilles back onto the car... they seem to be an eighth of an inch off...
By clips you mean...
DIAG #: 6 CLAMP x ??? 51131946258 $0.41
...right? If so, I'll get on it right now. Else I have the grille ordered via Bruno, to which I have yet to pick up.
yeah those clamps... get 40 of them.. some will break on install...
as for grilles, i've just spent two hours trying to get my plastic center grille and original painted metal grille to fit together...
the metal now has a paint chip.. and the plastic is scratched on the grille...
how do you say **** it in german

would say something like "Scheiß" Dieses Scheißauto! could mean "This f-ing car!"
Fick or ficken is more sex oriented than a curse
I'm sooo ready to take some photos for you.
My car is filthy and up on stands... I'm putting the front end back together tomorrow and if I finish, I'll wash her and take some photos.

i need to replace the middle trim along the belt line on one door - and also the bottom trim on the front fenders just ahead of the door. Which clamps do I need for this job? Do I need grommets as well?
