Help... I pulled out of my parking lot at work today and the BMW started slipping during its shift from 1st to 2nd. Then when I tryed to take off from the stop light, 1st gear shuttered really bad and acted like it was going to slip out. She then had plunty of power to the wheels untill it went to hit 2nd the it slipps for a few seconds and engages second. From second on she is just fine and reverse is normal. This is my daily driver 525i automatic... Please help... Thanks guys...

STOP DRIVING IT!
when the trans slips all its doing is frying the clutch packs ruining it. could be low on fluid or the filter could be clogged. could be many things but that is the starting point, sounds like low pressure.

Yeah, I limpped it home, only a couple of miles, and I'm burrowing my neighbors 240sx... This weekend I'm dropping the tranny pan and changing the filter and fluid... I was warned to just change the fluid and not to flush it... Any recomendations on fluids, weve discused this before but I want to use what will be best for a trans on the edge. BTW the tranny fluid is still red and doesnt look to bad just a little burnt looking. No metallic luster like ive seen in some cars right after the trans goes pop...

I heard of the same problem on a 89' 535i and it turned out to be an ECU problem.

Dextron III, filter, gasket and pray to Our Mother of Holy Hydromatics for deliverance from a rebuild.

Forget rebuild... If she's dead I'll part her out and buy a 535I with a 5 speed like I should of in the first place...

i have excact same problem here.... slipping from 1 to 2 gear.
changed the oil and filter yesterday... problem still there... maybe i should reset the ECU... But would it be enough just to reset the primary ECU or du i have to take the plug from the auto tranny main unit

I dont understand how the ECU could cause a mechanical slip... Is this actually a possibility...

the ATC would control the operation of the solinoids at the shift points.
sliping sounds more mechanical/hydrolic

maybe it could be some guibo issues or driveshaft bearings... im gonna have that looked up in a near future

Update...
I did the fluid and filter, she shifted great for about 20 min and now I only have reverse. Too bad, new tranny time...

my tranny also died last week... guess those things just blow up if not being proper cared about.
Mine blowed at 115.000 km. Have only had the car for 1 month.. just bad timing :-)
Cross you fingers and toes sports fans. Then do like B Bob says, only to the Holy Mother of ZFdromatics.
Hey, I just looked at your sig. You must be the only guy on the planet with a one ton truck and a Toyota Echo. Trying to mitigate the damage?

I had that happen in an E28 once. I drove the car 15 miles in reverse through side streets to get it home. I swear on a stack!
