I can only speak to the 540 question. I have a 1998 540 and love it. A lot of torque. The down side is the V8 does not have RAck and Pinion steering.

Really itching to buy a 540 6spd. Will replace my well worn 535i 5spd....will I regret. Are there any features 535 had 540 doesn't. I like not having Rack as they leak....why do you disagree?

535 has optional LSD which the 540 does not.
