its 97p a litre here in the u.k.
i can't believe the media either.
how dare they set the price of gas in the USA at $3.00 per gallon??????
Its still a crisis here for me in the States. Its still twice what it was a year ago at roughly $3.00 USD/Gallon for 93 ocatane.I may not die from it but i may wish i would...

you dont realize how good you've got it there :) almost £5 a gallon here:( mind you it is either 97 or 98 RON here
Is that mostly tax and transportation costs?

Our under educated pinko commie legislators enacted a “Gas Cap” capping the wholesale price of gas at a VooDoo price based on an average of the U.S. markets….
Of course after a few months of that nonsense it was repealed and prices now move according the market.
Yea! Chock one up for free markets and capitalism!

yeah I can't complain really i will be getting 98 RON fuel for 12c/L cheaper than usual
that ain't bad at all, mind you thats only a saving of $7 a week, i spent that much on gelati on the weekend.

similar to ice cream, but italian.

gelati is the plural of gelato, jeff.
Can my Bimmer run on it ? Is it cheaper than gas? Oh , another thing. They're adding Ethanol to gas now here too, up to 10%! I don't think my engine really likes it very much , am i imagining this?

They run E10 all winter where i live, and its not your imagination that your engine doesnt run as well. You will get decreased fuel economy and performance with Ethanol fuel.
I realize exactly what I have and the media has nothing to do with it.
We pay USD$3/gallon and the energy companies make record profits.

It's a $1.23/litre here in Melbourne at the moment.
All I can say is appreciate it while you can, because it ain't going to stay that way for long.
A hurricane in the Gulf, another blowup in the Middle East (I'm talking Iran), along with 15,000 new cars going onto the roads in China every day etc, etc.

$.92.4 here in Montreal.... we are always 4-6 cents more than Toronto too.
I NEVER expected it to go below $1.00 again, so I am regretting selling the 540 even more now!
yah, but you can't use regular in the BMW.

I don't think it is regulators that are to blame, after all, they are doing other people's dirty work. That's why those people spend so much money putting them there in the first place. Its a ****en circus; and these are just (some of) the effects. Consider the symptoms or perhaps a cause or two and you'll be happier about that decision...
That said, a 540 is a lot more frugal than an 535 on the highway (but a bit less so around town). :( Nick

The great engine swap in the middle of the E34 production run brought the minimum RON required to "premium" levels, or 95RON. Jehu, my 1995 M50 525i takes a minimum of 95RON, and I've never put in 91 or lower.
Older motors can take 91RON fine -- sometimes I wish I had one of these in my E34, would be a little less painful at the pump.

actually any of them with knock sensors (93 and up) can use piss water with the stock chip, the computer will detect ping and retard timing accordingly, besides during normal driving the ping is not really a problem it's when you ass down on it, some cars will get slightly better mpg on the good stuff but results can vary

mid 2.50s here still, which sucks as we are usually below national average, what really sucks is diesel has only dropped about a dime where gas has fallen almost .40 cents, seems to be the trend from reports on the cummins board

You do the math
The people putting money into oil at the merchantile exchange (nymex (http://www.nymex.com/)) sure did the math. I'm not saying that "big oil" doesn't have some effect on price, but when the basic building block for a gallon of gas is crude oil, and the price of crude is set by consumer confidence, I hardly fault the oil companies for making a lot of money on a product they esentially didn't set the price on.
When did you retire from BMW engineering again?

...what really sucks is diesel has only dropped about a dime where gas has fallen almost .40 cents, seems to be the trend from reports on the cummins board
if all our cars were to instantly get 50 mpg... the price of gas would go up so that in the end we'd all still spend just as much money at the pump. I think with all the diesel talk recently, the price will stay kind of high, becuase people are seeing the bennifits.
There is that new cleaner burning diesel stuff to, probably "costs more" to make it.

Actually, the middle east has QUITE a few E34s.
But I don't know about Afghanistan, because it's formally part of Asia.
It reminded me of how many are in UAE, Saudi and even Iraq.
Many wealthy Sunnis used their oil wealth to buy them in the 90s.
Seriously.

I just don't like sending money to people buying missiles aimed at your family. That happens with russia and china as well, but they aren't stupid enough to use them. The muslims with oil are stupid enough to use them. We need to not buy anything from them. They can use their crude for goat cream. I don't care.

Zeuk in Oz
09-12-2006, 06:33 PM
Just re-directing this thread back on track - the biggest crisis in Oz, IMHO, isn't the price of petrol, rather the market share that the 2 big supermarkets are getting.
For instance, where I live petrol at the large Woolworths or Coles fuel sellers was $1.12 per litre yesterday. This is sold through Castrol and Shell respectively.
My BP independent was purchasing petrol for $1.22 per litre and selling it for $1.26.
He reckons that his fuel sales have halved over the past few years due to the undercutting by the supermarkets - they subsidise the cost from their grocery sales.
Where this is leading is that in the not too distant fututre in Oz there will only be 2 fuel suppliers, both allied to the major supermarkets, and they will be able to charge whatever they like as there will be no competition.
Support your independents or fuel will go through the roof in future is probably a good policy to adopt.

No - the real farce is that the major states in Australia subsidise the petrol price in Queensland. The Queensland Government can subsidise fuel prices by IIRC 8 cents per litre due to the supposed development subsidy that the major states provide. Crazy.

It is just a fight of the Titans.
In the left corner;
the oil companies (and their pollie mates)
In the right corner
the big retail groups (and their pollie mates)
and squashed in the middle, the small operators who have their asses bared, ready to please their masters.
Now we're all outside the ring paying and supporting each one of the combatants to be there in the cheapest way we can. That means we bet big money on the Titans, and try to pay as little as possibe to the small operators, if anything at all.
And we have a great way to avoid paying every party in this melee: For any small operator that jumps out of the ring to save their bacon- you guessed it, we send the Lawyers and Bankers after 'em to make them sorry.
It's kinda like a Corporate Colluseum... we love pitting the weakest amongst us against our worst Monsters...

On a lighter note, half a tankful of BP Ultimate from the service station (over $110 to fill up- ouch!) and Heidi's cosumption has dropped back and she's all fired up again. I've been running 95 RON and had a couple of tankfuls of ethanol laced **** recently. Like a new car. One tank of that ethanol-mix really screws it up I think, a few more tests will tell for sure. Ultiamte is 10c/L 98 RON more than 95 RON. Am running the Aussie powerchip, its not as good as the EAT I believe. Runs pretty well atm though ;)
