Could any of you guys tell me what happens if the EAT chip goes bad? Does that control any of the voltages to componets in your car? I'm having a problem with my AC rear window defog and the recycle air control. I believe this is the center to the problem I'm having with my car. Or maybe someone will know how or where the voltage that powers the read out in your gauge cluster?
I would bet it's not related.

Resolder your IHKA control module, which sits behind the center console next to the microfilter.
Both are controlled by this module. Look for black spots.
To remove it, remove on both sides of the center console the panel, remove on each side 3 plugs, pull out to passenger side.

Is this something easy to get to or will I have to struggle to get out? Is a brand new part expensive?

Yes, it is quite expensive new. If you look for a used one, check for exactly the same part number, as there are about 40 different designs.
But I would open it first and see for burnt / black spots.
Usually people repair it. A radio or TV shop can do that too.
This is a IHKA unit (not sure if you have IHKA ir IHR or ...) IHKA is Klimatronic = fully automatic climate control

If you have this control panel, you have IHKA

new = $600
for a little black box with a circuit board in it.
i would imagine the production cost is around $40
