Is there a way to put a totally concealable hitch on a 1990 535i? Something where you can remove the ball when not in use and close up the panel?

I don't know how concealed it it, but you can get detachable ones.
Bosal do one, I'm looking to find a supplier at the minute.

Get a hold of the BMW/Westfalia E34 kit, like I did. Most of the bolt holes are in place on your car anyway. Even the hole for the cables to go through is there.. Just remove the bumper, swap your rams for the solid brackets, bolt the tow frame on (you need to drill 4 holes, 2 each side), bolt the 'in-boot' retaining bracket in place, cut a hole in the bumper for the rectangular trim to clip into, wire everything up, refit the bumper and you're good to go! With practice the horsecock clips into place in <5 seconds. There's a plastic 'pointer' built in the bumper to keep you right.

I've got the E34 fitting instructions/user manual here. I will post it if anyone i interested.
