Here's a strange one, not a trans program for a change !

Car is '93 540i Auto and it has a gearbox problem. It is easier if I let the owner explain - this is how he has described the issue, which apparantly occurs when its pulling away in 1st but not in 'winter' mode, which doesn't use first. I cant read the codes or diagnose it as its a car I dont own but one I might buy if its cheap enough and if people think the issue here is not likely to be a big (expensive) one. This is how he described it to me:

"transmission warning light has never shown.is not clutch slip.it requires a slight rise in revs to over come resistance as if something was physically holding the car back.as stated when in winter mode which does not use first the problem is not there no clonk or noise.
hope that helps "

Anyone think they know what it could be based only on this information, and if its a big or small issue ?

Cheers.

impossible to say but i can only share my own experience. same thing happened a while ago to me and as a result I had it rebuilt totally for about $3 grand aussie. done 250,000 at the time and wasnt sure if the tranny oil had ever been changed. has now i guess. best of luck, do a search, im sure theres heaps available and recently enough too.

going to have to replace the valve body with a rebuilt one.If he drives it long like this he'll be rebuilding the transmission. Kirt is the best guy to talk to regarding this.

Thanks Bill, seems you're always helping me out lately - keep it up :-)) Dont suppose anyone has a handle on valve body replacement price ? (I'm in uk so a US price would only be a guide I guess). Cheers.

Thanks, its not over the top then if the car's cheap. I'll try to find a box specialist here in uk to see what they think. Cheers.
