I used 15w50 mobil 1 for the first time last fall. Just changed it today after 4,800 miles. Boy, was it dirty looking and seemed much thicker than the new 15w50 mobil 1 put back in.
Is this typical for the first change? It seems as if synthetic oils clean the engine much better than conventional oils.
I also used a BMW filter. Is ther a better filter to use. I removed a Mahle. It actually looked better made.
The car seems to run smoother and quieter. Just an observation.

If you are considering oil change intervals between 4k-5k miles, then it might be wise to change the oil filter half way through. Eventhough the oil is up to the task of a longer interval, the filter may not be.

I had not intended to go so long. However, I work in one city and my dealer and/or Indy was in the town where I live. Never could coordinate. Finally did it myself. No problem. Actually, is was rather easy. However, I did not torque the insert cover or drain bolt. need an adapter on my torque wrench. May not have tightened enough. I will watch.

synthetic dont break in til 3000 miles, I wouldnt go 10K on it tho. Replacing the filter more often is a good idea if its flushing the engine clean.

Mobil1 functions as a detergent as well as a lubricant and will therefore over time remove the build-up that has been accruing on the inside of your engine from regular oil. Even as it removes and cleans and becomes dirty, it still retains superior lubricating qualities that your engine is most grateful for... I can send you pictures of two M30 engines with their valve covers removed, one that has had the benefit of 15W-50 Mobil1 for the past 100,000K and one that hasn't- you'll be amazed at the difference.

Please post the pics here. As a 15w-50 mobil 1 user I'd like to see them.

Not sure if my 535i (170,000kms) had been using synthetic all it's life or not, but it was still clean inside when I adjusted the valves for the first time in January.

that golden color and the crud on the spray bar bolt indicate dino oil. The synthetic must have really cleaned it up cause everything would have that crud on it if they didnt change it very often. Any engine I saw inside that did lifetime synthetic looks "brand new" no golden color ar specks of crud. good clean looking motor.

I have only had my 5'er for about 3 months now....it is a 1990 w/170,000km...my debate is at that age...do i want to start synthetic? The engine is a little wet from oil but no drips on the garage floor at all....I am afraid that if I do go synthetic (which I have on all my other cars) that the engine may really start to leak....just don't know!

http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/ronkirk/BMW/father-engine.jpg http://www.angelfire.com/gundam/ronkirk/BMW/kirk-engine.jpg The clean shot is form a 92' 735iL with 230,000 miles. It has had Mobil1 for the last 100,000. The yucky shot is from my recently purchased 91' 535i which has had BMW dealer oil changes since new every 3000 miles! Guess what was the first thing changed in this car's diet... And by the way, yes, I put lock-tite on the new banjo bolts... One of the 735's had actually backed out and was lying in the nook next to the intake valve spring. Yikes!

OK!!! Screw-it!!! I will deal with the drips if it happens!! I did my first oil change on this 535i and put in Mobil1...I will post should any leaks develope! Now I had a Mann filter kit!! Thanks to Bruno who only lives a 1/2 hour away from me! Anyhow, I replaced all the seals and rings that came with the filter but what is the LARGE metal ring (watch face sized) for that was in the kit???
