Hi chaps,
I am looking for pics of the location of the ABS valve/pump unit to help me install ABS to my car. I know where it goes but I'd like to see if I need to alter anything. Luckily the car has part of the ABS wiring loom fitted already, but any 'real' pics of ABS related hardware will help me enormously.
Cheers,
Shaun

Wow. Bold project. It's gonna take more than just the ABS modulator and modified/replaced brake pipes. At the very least, you're going to need to install wheel sensors at each hub and the ABS "brain" in the electrical box on the right-hand side of the firewall. I assume, but can't say for sure, that all the wiring is already in place and the hubs are ABS-compatible. If not, you'll have to do that, too.
If I were you, I'd probably sell the 520i and buy another E34 with ABS. E34s are so cheap and plentiful in the UK that there's no reason not to simply buy a car with the goodies you want.

Thank for your reply Dave. Yes I need to fit the wheel sensors etc. which luckily isn't too difficult, as the wiring is already in place in all 4 corners.
I don't want to get another car as this one has everything on that I need (good interior, westfalia towbar, digital dash, rebuilt engine etc)
Do you fancy nipping outside and taking a photo of your ABS valve unit?!!
Cheers,
Shaun

Couple of pics from an M50 525. I'm posting as the unit seems to differ from Carlo's. Mine is a US spec car, sold in Canada.

Thanks a million to you both for posting them pics - as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! I'll start collecting the ABS components and let you know how I get on (or get stuck!)
Thanks again!

I've looked at both of your pictures and noticed bad things. Dave M - has someone been robbing parts off your engine? That's bad. Looking at CarloE34's pics and he's even more unlucky. someone has STOLEN his engine! I mean, how bad is it when you park your car up on an evening, come out the next day, start her up and THERE'S NOTHING THERE?
How many other E34's are being robbed like this? Should we create an engine security thread?
Cheers,
Shaun

You know, now that you mention it, the e34's been hesitating on cold mornings. I think its due to a lack of emergency flares in the tool kit.
Thanks Shaun ;)

I noticed a big difference between the pumps in my 9/90 build date 535i and my 4/92 build date 525iT!
9/90:

4/92:

If you're looking for the 91 style pump, I'd sell that one for $50...worked fine, car is headed out to pasture soon.
all damn ABS's are diffrent??? i'll take a pic of mine in the morning. doesn't realy look like those

Thanks for those pics Mr Project! The pump that I intend to fit is the same as your '90 model 535 4-channel one. It looks like you have some sort of silver heatshield under there too? Also is the short wiring loom to the ABS pump removable at the other end?
Cheers,
Shaun

Actually I think that 'heat sheild' is a broken chunk of fan blade. :) Sorry if that is dissapointing. :)
The ABS pump wiring goes into the main body harness in the engine compartment, which means it goes to either the body computer or the fusebox, or both. Unfortunately not easily removed either way.
