E34 Inspection 2... What's involved?

My E34 is now showing it needs in Inspection 2, only 4500 miles after it's last oil service (which i only had done 6 weeks ago!)...

Anyway, apart from the front shocks need changing (which i already knew about), everything else is in good order and nothing needs doing unscheduled...

So what is involved in the Inspection 2? I ask, cos I can get all the parts at cheaper than trade price, so it will pay for me to order them tomorrow as the car needs a service ASAP... I also ask cos i'm wondering how much this is going to sting (excluding changing shocks) in labour... I know an independent specialist, who will do me a good price, but I still appreciate it's a lot more labour than just the oil service...

So what will i need? Filters? Plugs? What else???

From a PDF I have, I think it's pretty accurate

Engine Compartment:
O Check and adjust valve clearance (M20 – M30).
O Replace camshaft timing belt every other Inspection II or 50K miles.
O Inspect V-belt/Poly-ribbed drive condition, check tension (M20-M30).
O Lubricate throttle linkage.
O Change Oil and oil filter.
O Change air filter or clean it if reusable (like K&N).
O Check battery acid level and correct if needed.
O Check Coolant level and inspect system for leaks.
O Check Steering fluid and brake/clutch level.
O Check windshield washer fluid level.
Undercarriage:
O Change automatic transmission fluid (except 540i).
O Change manual transmission oil.
O Check clutch plate for wear.
O Check drive axle boots for leaks.
O Change final drive fluid (’95 change synthetic fluid every other Insp.II).
O Replace fuel filter.
O Check fuel lines, fuel tank and all connections for leaks.
O Inspect exhaust system.
O Check steering box and steering linkages for leaks and excess play.
O Inspect brake callipers, rotors and brake pad thickness.
O Inspect brake hoses and lines for damage or leaks.
O Check handbrake, adjust cable if needed.
O Check thickness of parking brake linings.
O Inspect front suspension and wheel bearings for play.
O Inspect wheels, tires and adjust tire pressures.
O Check spare tire pressure.
O Change ASC+T filter (car with traction control).
O Check hydraulic fluid level for LAD (car with Level Control System)
Body and Interior:
O Lubricate door hinges, hood latch and hood hinges.
O Check operation of exterior/interior lights (including glove box, engine compartment… ).
O Check headlight and driving light aiming.
O Check condition and function of seat belts.
O Check operation of washer system and wiper blade condition.
O Check active check control panel for faults.
O Check function of air conditioning. Check refrigerant charge at sight glass.
O Tighten A/C compressor mounting bolts.
O Tighten nuts and bolts for door locks and striker plates.
O Check ground connection of SRS (airbag) front sensor to body (if equipped)
O Replace intake dust/pollen micro filter in A/C unit (no filter in ’89 E34).
O Replace batteries for alarm/remote control in master key (’95 E34).
Road Test:
O Check braking performance, steering, HVAC, transmission and mirrors.

Thanks, at least mine's an M50 so doesn't require all the extra the old M20 and M30 engines needed...

Well considering the final green light only went out 50 miles ago, and i drive it daily and generally fairly long journeys where the car has a chance to get thoroughly warmed up, how many miles have i got left to get it serviced? And does the orange light go out leaving a red only, and if so, what happens then?

Nothing 'happens' when the red light comes on. It's just a notification that service is due. I pretty much ignore those lights and just keep a spreadsheet of when I need to do what (which is usually more frequently then the manual calls for).

you and I both, looks unprofessional though. i just service stuff when i think is best. i got an inspection 2 done when i first got the car so, but i think i am going to change the Gearbox and diff oils very soon.
