I thought the first pic looked real mean! I also got my eBay air filter ($15 or something shipped and the foam is nice and thick!) and put that in today. Working good! I call it a gafilter fish.

That's Pat P's intercooler - approx 18x9x3". He dyno'd 692 whp on it ;)

Mine is 16x13x3" - 624 cubic inches while his is 486 cubic inches - a huge intercooler is NOT NECESSARY. One that COOLS is necessary. My intake air temps are ambient temperature + 10 - 15 degrees. That is PERFECTLY IDEAL and much more efficient than 99% of turbo M3s even with their larger IC's due to my compressor size.

The "puny air filter" is the same dimensions as an HKS Power Flow filter. Let me show you some cars that use these ;)

another thing that makes that filter look small is that huge ass turbo, ya shoulda gotten a bhaf as it's known to diesel guys :D ( big honken air filter ) it's a little smaller then a 5 gallon bucket

Haha yep - seen some obsenely large filters on my friends diesel trucks. You and I both know I can't fit much in there hehe. The huge H1E does dwarf the air filter.

Dude, come on. We've all enterred threads with opinions, even you. I'm not trying to call you out and be an ******* or anything, so please, don't get me wrong. You can't seriously think you can make a thread and not have people express their opinions. Educated or not, that's the point. You post, people reply, you clarify. To those of us that don't know ****, and don't even know where to begin researching intercooler size, we're going to say that it looks small. Before I knew a little bit about FI I just figured that a big ass intercooler worked cause it had a ton of surface area, thus more cooling capacity......

What's the largest intercooler you can fit in there with the stock bumper bar? It looks like there's more room on the right hand side of the car, possibly on the left side also.

When did you go with the yellow high beams (laminex or new hellas)?

When an engine is turbo'd does all the air for combustion go through the filter on the turbo or is that only in use when the turbo spools? I guess I'm asking if you end up deleting the stock box?

Guys - I have a intake air temp sensor hooked directly into the MegaSquirt - it's a GM open-element sensor... Im not just guessing @ what my intake temps are - laff.

see, that's a lame joke/insult. my comment wasn't directed at the size of the unit. i've been pouring through briggs and stratton service manuals for the past two weeks, in an attempt to get a recalcitrant lawnmower to work (someone decided to leave a 9 month old lawnmower outside in the florida rainshine w/ no cover for 6 months--because they needed the room in the shed). the second i saw your pic, i began to flip through these here manuals, 'cause i could swear that i saw an air filter looking like that attached to a B&S motor, its definitely inspired by the B&s design school in some way. its like when you see a picture of a new rolls royce motor in a magazine, you recognise instantly that some of the hardware in there is from the BMW common parts bin. long story short, for someone who is putting a great deal of effort into making their install look professional, i think that air filter is terribly unbecoming towards both your car, and yourself. i say that with no malice at all.

Look at the air filter - the issue isnt the fog light or the lower bumper at all. The issue is the high beam, radiator hose, etc. You don't want to do whacky bends in front of the turbo. Theres no reason to move the filter, its great where it is. Moving it lower means im likely to hydrolock it. No thx.

That intercooler is probably great for his boost level.. you dont want a huge IC while doing under 10psi. large IC will only give greater pressure lost. Depending on the core design.. it may work even more effectively than a large intercooler.

BTW what ever happen to liquid cooled turbos. I dont see them much anymore. When I did my Turbo Conversion in my RX7 there is hose galore coming out of the turbo cartridge. Ballbearing turbos doesnt need liquid cooled cartridges?

Typically ball bearings need water feed yes. OE turbos use coolant but for the most part journal bearings dont need them and are much easier to work. Coolant lines arent bad, we just use the ones that go to the throttle body circulation to feed and return, just a PITA.

This intercooler core is supportive up to 500 whp. Should do me ;) When it stops being effective, I will starting methanol injection.

Very nice work, I like how clean everything looks.

Are there any temp changes with the radiator having that IC blocking a portion of it?

The coolant temps read 185 - 190 on average. I haven't ever been looking at the laptop or datalog to see anything higher.

it's not running enough boost for long enough for the intercooler to heat up the radiator, now some of the diesel guys running 80+# are getting turbo output temps in the 600s that's a little toasty :D

If I remember reading your back posts.....you've deleted ALL A/C componets ,right ?
After all said and done....do you STILL feel there was NO WAY to FMIC the car without the deletes ?
The reason I ask, I have my front bumper cover and aluminum bar off right now and was just mocking things up to see. Certainly not much room for any NEW schtuff in there.
BTW, install does look clean....props !:)
