View Full Version : Can OBD2 code reader read E34 codes thru DL connector?....

Mitch2K's thread about cables makes me wonder. It looks like the ISO 9141-2 K & L Line signals available at the E34 Data Link connector pins 20 & 15 are the same protocol that a OBD2 Code reader is looking for at pins 7 & 15. Add power and ground(s). Will it work??

E34DataLink Pin 20 ==> OBD2 Pin 7 (ISO 9141-2 K Line)
E34DataLink Pin 15 ==> OBD2 Pin 15 (ISO 9141-2 L Line)
E34DataLink Pin 14 ==> OBD2 Pin 16 (+12 VDC)
E34DataLink Pin 19 ==> OBD2 Pins 4 & 5 (Chassis & Signal Grounds)

Be interesting to find out. I was under the assumption that all the e34 were OBD-I, and subsequently have proprietary protocols.

You just want to read the code? Well, our car has built in flasher that blinks out the codes.

The built-in code reader (stomp test) is only engine/emission related, but cannot read any central chassis problem, such as a defective microswitch in the door or a stepper motor in the aircon system. But a real DIS for example can do this.

This is true only for US spec cars ... the rest of us have to resort to other means.

No, I've tried it. I bought an OBDII scanner and the BMW adapter cable and attempted to interface with the stock ECU with the Carsoft software. It was not able to connect.

No, I've tried it. I bought an OBDII scanner and the BMW adapter cable and attempted to interface with the stock ECU with the Carsoft software. It was not able to connect.
