Looked at a '97 528IT today for my muso mate and was a bit startled by the appearance of the oil filler cap.
Perfect service record with BMW, has done 97,500 km and is in very nice condition generally.
Is this sort of rusty, flakey appearance anything to worry about ?

The vehicle's probably been subject to a lot of short runs that warm up the engine enough to produce condensation under the valve cover but not hot enough to boil off the condensation.

Agree, just as a foamy, water froth will form after periods of sitting, especially in varying temps. That amount of rust, however, may be worth a head cover removal to inspect things.
Nice car, good luck with it (for your mate that is)

I had thought that might be the case. Also a slight burnt smell.
If my mate is interested, I will get my BMW specialist to go over it with a fine tooth comb.
Thanks for the replies.
