I am sick with an intense cold, my desktop computer was out of commission, so I went to a friends house all bummed up. Met my friend there to assist in setting up his '05 STi motor (orig. motor blew) and felt like **** so went home earlier than expected - my buddy followed me back the garage and by chance had a vid camera. This is what he was able to come up with.

Ignore the weird **** - I have nothing to do with that haha.

Jon, from what I can hear under the music it sounds pretty good. How fast were you going once you were doing sweeps forward and aft?? 40 50mph??

First of all, where are you?
Second, don't ever look back at somebody like that.
Third, quit using your brakes as much, you use them just as the fun begins.
Fourth, I knew that you'd come around to debadging.
Lastly, I want to see more updated pictures of the interior.

Honestly jeff there's not much to be seen - 70 mph cruising, 3000 rpm, dip into throttle and the revs rocket up due to clutch letting go. The car doesn't LOOK that fast in the video. Keep in mine its a 3800lb car practically and has a audio/video/computer setup in it. That combined with the clutch being pathetic, this car is fast if it could get it to the driveline.

I would have to say your cluth is fubared as in a normally aspirated vehicle. definetly upgrade that componant, looks great as in acceleration, why hold off on the new clutch? Damn nice work you got goin on there Jon.

Thanks Jeff

Holding out because I am building a 8.3:1 compression M50. Don't know if I want to do Stagr 3+ or Stage 4 clutch... and if I do, debating on just waiting until i have the motor ready to go in.

Oh shutup big al - people were pressing for a video so pt took this and was real quick about editting.

Last I talked to conner was @ his house - had the trans fully bolted on and everything. He was doing the cooling and charge pipes. I bet he'll have it running by today.

Sa-weet!

Are the puffs of smoke out of the exhaust during up and downshifts normal for a highly-strung engine, or is something not right?

Yea badass jon, wish i had the time and money to create what you have. how bout a vid. from the inside of your car?... I could barely hear anything with the jamaican music and that VW exhaust. video was great tho.

Thats an impressive sounding car, as well as pretty to look at!

Couple of comments though - as others have said, you should try & mount the cam in your car & go for a spin for sure...
But before you do - fix that clutch! I know you're building a new motor up etc, but for a couple of hours work I'd change the clutch tomorrow!
Can see the car wants to go - but then the clutch lets go and it doesn't really look any quicker than, say, my 535 with a slushbox :(

Comments aside - fair play to ya! :D

p.s. - 'grats on becoming a Mod - hadn't spotted that til now! :D

Heh it may not look much faster than a 535i slushbox.. but if you put one next to it... you'd see its night and day. It blows a 535i Turbo TCD S2 away :)

LOL - 9.5 psi on a 10.0:1 CR 24v 2.5L from a Holset H1e = close to 380 - 390tq at the flywheel.

I RAN from a 292 wheel torque mk5 (2006+) 2.0T GTI.

I'll get Cereal Killa to chime in here - he owns the 535i Turbo

Yeah - not to mention I am running like 8.5 - 9:1 Air to Fuel ratios on boost :( You can see the fuel pouring out of the car when I blip the throttle and or accelerate. There's prob another 75 - 100 hp in the car between my timing and fuel.

Jon's car destroys mine. When I get MS running and up the boost a bit it'll be closer, but he'll probably still be faster.

To be honest he needs a lot more boost to match my H1E @ 9.5 He'd prob need like 1 bar.

I am a little surprised to see that you are not getting any misfires. I believe 9:1 is about the misfire range. Somehow I doubt your afrs are that bad. I've seen cars run pretty rich and they tend to blow clouds of black smoke out of the tail pipe.

Red line is wideband AFR. Notice the graph is at 10.11 at the point stopped. Notice how its even lower (richer) just to the right. Notice MAX is 21.9 (pure oxygen, ie fuel cut when decel) and MIN (richest) is 8.5

Anton CH.
10-01-2006, 11:57 PM
OK so how is that 8.5? Judging by that figure above the AFRs don't dip bellow 10.

What in the hell - read the screen. Thats a screenshot I just happen to have online, I didn't take it just for this. At that point, letting off of boost, its 10.1:1. You can see the line is even lower to the left of it, its in the 8's. The scale is not linear. Additionally, if it doesnt dip below 10, then why would it show the max of 21.9 (pure air) and min 8.5? That SS is just when I was looking for my boost level before lift. The Max and Min values are the max and min of that field on the table. The min being 8.5:1

Cool data log. I just read some info on turbos and I think I understand why you chose a large turbo. I liked the vid, except for music....and the faggy hand wave, lol. :)

Im stunned! I really want to turbo my car to, but the MS thing is not my field.

But how can your 2.5 turbo be faster than a 3.5 turbo, remember, there is no replacement for displacement. So if you have 1bar boost, and the 535 have 1 bar boost, the 535 will have more torque and hp. If both engines are in good condition that is.

Jon K
10-02-2006, 08:26 AM
Espen - while my H1E moves 72#/min of air, the turbo on the 3.5L may only move 30#/min if that. Additionally, there are a lot of aspects you're not taking into account - the biggest being that an M50 is a 24v DOHC. Meaning, I have 2 valves to shove air through on the intake side per cylinder, and 2 valves to exhaust through, more air flow = more power. Cereal has 1 valve in 1 valve out. Additionally, I have 244/244 cam profile while I am pretty sure his is much less aggressive.

Espen
10-02-2006, 08:39 AM
The ammount of air pr min is not important in my example where both car had the same boos pressure.
About 24v vs 12 I agree with you, but the 12v have 1 big valve, where the 24v have 2 smaller.

What i tried to say where, a bigger displacement will always produce more power, when you put the same amount of money in it.

Lets stop that discussion, i think we both agree that turbo is fun. I have my own turbo project goin on my old Volvo.

Thats fine - I know my car is fast on this low boost of 9.5 psi. I smoke the 535i turbo and his buddy just told ya! Wait until I have my 8.3:1 motor built for 22 - 25 psi :P

Looking good JK.I think the slipping clutch issue would only delay your mapping efforts to get them clean ? Heck....even installing an automatic would pacify the tuning efforts up to their shifting points. I guess you could manually hold position and simulate rpm points ?
I can't imagine a stock tranny living too lonf above 350 hp hammering...but then, your not concerned with that, right ?
I always loved my builds with a loud exahaust at first, but then I always ended up toneing them down a little more stealthy later on....think you will ?

Very nice Jon. Too loud for me (wow I really must be getting old considering 3 months ago I had a full 3" on my DSM). can't wait until you upgrade the clutch and can really use the power.
Where's the oil smoke coming from? turbo or the valve seals?

I am thinking valve seals - the turbo is brand new < 1500 miles on it and the oil drain is good. The head on the other hand just clicked over 190,200 this past weekend :)
