View Full Version : accumulated mileage ?
Since the newest of our cars are ten + years old now I'm curious to hear how many miles they all have.
What is the consensus for "high" mileage on an E34?
How far do you expect yours to go without being a drain on the wallet?

I would say high mileage is anything over 200k miles? Mines almost there but there are no problems to speak of except cosmeticly. I think Nika will go 300 without any major issues.

Occasionaly the mileage question is raised, so try a search. There have been quite a few posts in which folks compare mileage and maintenance.
Plently of us are close to or over 300k. Mine had no serious issues at 310k, but one cylinder was low in compression and I needed a winter project. Swapped in a rebuilt block, refurbished the head and i'm hoping to break 1,000,000k km (600+k miles). That is, if we have enough oil.

My 91 only has 44K miles, but I plan on putting a ton more on her as the years pass...there are many threads about mileage if you do a search, as mentioned above...

My 95 has 156k miles. The PO was a road-warrior driving about 70 miles round trip to work daily and frequently driving out of state.

I'm just short of 211k miles, engine still runs great and trans shifts smoothly. Engine still has vacuum at the oil cap! pretty impressive compared to my old mercedes 190E with tons of blowby. Just stupid dents/dings and door bottom rust to deal with! I have had to replace some things (fan shroud/seat cables) that are unique wear problems to the e34. Can't say enough about how well these things were built!

150,500 here.....on a heart of nikasil!
I would love for 300k
179k runs perfect, original clutch, 2nd set of brakes, just replaced fuel tank straps. Would love to see it go half a million miles if I live that long.

145,000 miles. I expect mine to go till the next tank fill-up before being a drain on the wallet (need new rear subframe bushes and the steering box is wobbly).

215,000 on original motor & trans. Motor still does not use oil between changes, and trans shifts strong - and no rust anywhere. I am expecting at least 250,000, but figure 300k is possible. As for cost - I keep it up as best as I can, which means fixing the little things before they become big ones. Most likely big ticket item will be a trans problem, I guess.

Isn't rust illegal in Texas?

No, but it should be. Since we don't have winter in my part of the state, it's pretty easy to avoid with a little care. But still you see some relatively new cars with lost of rust. Nothing like a little TLC to keep your toys nice.

Mine has 278000 km (174000 mi), it's still in very good shape (mecanical and boddy) and pleasant to drive. I figure out it could reach 350000 km (over 200000 mi), i saw an idential one around here that had reach more than that.
It's alway possible to fixe mecanical problems, at the least cost when done preventive, but it's not cheap unless you're able to DIY all.
Question of rust, i am running in the snow and calcium a good part of the year, in those conditions you have to wax the car couple of time in the summer to protect it and wash it each week in winter time and mainly take care of the bottom of the doors. Oil treatment at the most vulnerable points / parts also help a lot (within the bottom of each door, on the gaz tank joints... the most critical one being the jonction between the gaz tank and the tubing that bring the gasoline in the tank). That's my experience.

3/1989 535iM.. 270,something k's (virtually all highway) and drives still like new, suspension, clutch, steering etc all feel as tight as... to be honest my previously owned 1993 540i with 135,000k's felt like driving a boat in comparison..i expect to get many many more of thousands of k's with little problems..everything works even the little light in the key (is that a first?) hopefully servicing will be my main cost, we live in hope...thanks for the interesting post :)
