I sprung a leak in the heater hose that runs from the aux coolant pump to the back of the engine. I tried to look up the part number on realoem.com. It looks like I need part #3, but they do not list the BMW part number. Anyone got a clue?

Does the hose you need have custom molded curves on it ?
If not you could use standard straight heater hose, available from any parts store.
You may want to replace all the heater hoses if there original hoses. Just to be safe.

Yes, it does appear to be a custom molded piece. I bought some heater hose at the auto store to try to replace, but I felt like it was going to be quite tricky to do so without crimping the hose. I'm perplexed why the part shows at realoem, but they did not identify the part number. I'll try the dealer today, and if that doesn't work, hopefully I can work it out with the straight hose I have. For a temporary fix, I cut the hose at the leak and spliced back together with a 45 degree copper elbow and hose clamps.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure, but the shape of that hose looks correct. However, the diagram looks quite different from the other diagram at realoem.com as well as what I see under the hood. Here are a couple pictures - kind of hard to miss the splice, which incidently came off on my way to work:

Hmmm... it appears #9 in your diagram is the same part number as #16 in the realoem diagram. From what I can figure, that part seems to be used when the Additional Water Pump is ommited. It still appears to me that #3 at realoem.com is what I need - the hose that goes from the Additional Water Pump to the Engine Inlet.

Well, I went back to realoem.com and changed the vehicle to a 1990 525i and it lists hose #3 as part 64211384746. I'm going to go with my instinct here and order it.

That particular hose never shows up on 530's or 540's according to them, it shows up on 525's though :

I wouldnt... hose 16 part numbers do not match, meaning 3 wont either.

let yo click on something that your car doesn't use. Thats why 3 doesn't come up for you.

I noticed that hose 16 part numbers don't match from the 525i to the 540i. However, on the 525i, both hose 3 and 16 are the same part number and description - "HOSE F ENGINE INLET AND ADDIT.WATER PUMP".
If you follow the coolant flow, it comes from the Engine Inlet and goes into the horizontal inlet of the Additional Water Pump (#1). Then out of the top of the Additional Water Pump into the Water Valve (15) through Hose 2. Hose 3 says it goes from the Engine Inlet to the Additional Water Pump. Hose 16 for the 540i says it goes from the Engine Inlet directly to the Water Valve, which doesn't make sense. If you have the Additional Water Pump (which I do), you need a hose going in (3) and going out (2).

Bill,
That certainly makes sense, however, since they list the Additional Water Pump (1) and the Hose (2) that goes from the Additional Water Pump to the Water Valve, there must be a hose that goes from the Engine Inlet to the Additional Water Pump, right?
I can only reach two conclusions from this: 1) Hose 3 is required to go from the Engine Inlet to the Additional Water Pump, or 2) the Hose 16 description and location depicted in the diagram are incorrect - "HOSE F ENGINE INLET AND WATER VALV".
Frankly, I believe from looking at the diagrams and the photos that either one of those would likely be able to work.
Again, I appreciate the help.

Gut instinct here is to go to the dealer, get the definitive part number (beat them with the original pipe if they say it doesnt exist for that car) and then see if you can order it from realoem.

Well, I ordered and recieved Hose 3 for a 525i. It is definitely not the correct hose, however, I was able to make it work by cutting a few inches off. If I had to do it again, I'd order Hose 16 for the 540i, even though the description and diagram are confusing.
