So what do the rest of you who are in the elite over 50 crowd thing about our age?

I am kind of digging it. I like odd numbered decades.

Twentys suck--too much angst trying to get the personality together. Faced with your personality flaws every day and no past experience to assure you that things are going to turn out ok. Any their is all that "find a main squeeze" pressure.

Thirties are the best. You got it together personality wise, career wise, and if you are lucky--relationship wise, and their aren't enough miles on the body for things to start breaking yet.

Forties--yawn. Onset of short arm disease and old knees. Bi-focals become the hot fashion accessory.

Fifties rock--Enough money to buy cool toys and you really just don't give a ___ what people think. I have had more than one guy say to me recently that I am scarey. Onset of the "life is short--eat dessert first" philosophy. At this age, you sweat confidence.

The main thing I am not liking about this decade of my life is that it freaks me out when I see how old people my age are. A lot of them are pretty decrepit, their personalities have become calcified, their lives are about grandkids and getting to social security. The fun side of that is watching my husband and I getting younger and younger by the day, while his adult daughter and her husband are getting older and older. They are going to pass us soon.

Here is a joke that sort of captures the problem of being over 50.

Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, "Surely I can't look that old!"

I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist when I noticed his diploma hanging on the wall. It bore his full name and I suddenly remembered a tall, handsome dark-haired boy with the same name. He had been in my high school class some 40-odd years before and I wondered if he could be the same guy I had a secret crush on way back then?

When I got into the treatment room I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was much too old to have been my secret crush... or was he?

After he examined my teeth I asked if he had attended Morgan Park High School.

"Yes, I did. I'm a Mustang!" he said, gleaming with pride.

"When did you graduate?" I ask ed.

"1959. Why do you ask?" He answered.

"Well, you were in my class!" I exclaimed.

Then that ugly, old, wrinkled son of a bitch asked, "What did you teach?"

it's ... interesting. Go to the gym and was working my way up through the weights, then after a year or so my shoulders and elbows started keeping me awake - old strains coming back to visit. Now i focus on building up my shoulder support and trying to keep from looking like a snake that swallowed a basketball. Amused by how persistent people (me in particular) are about being themelves - leopards/spots:
Always been thrifty, was lucky enough to hook up early with a girl of like mind, Taurean persistence, and a work ethic that keeps me doing. Result is that we now have enough, given our modest lifestyle, to last till our late 80s and we keep adding to the stash. Find myself unable/unwilling to change spending habits. Rarely pay for repair services, mostly clothes come from consignment shops, newest car ever owned was 10 years old. But we spend big at the dentist for frequent tooth cleanings. Guess that new doesn't impress me but quality and maintenence do.
Been joking about my REALLY blond hair for a few years - grew my first beard in 30 years a couple months ago and holy crap - it came in white! Look like a friggin short haired Gandalf.

Yeah. like i'll be as sucessfull at being carefree and irresponsible as the greater mass of people are at being fiscally judicious, plodding, and metered in thought and deed. Lots of ways to live a life though, and I accept myself warts foibles and all. Am concious always of the great good luck i was blessed with to be born as i am, to the parents i had, and to the place and circumstances of my birth. Fortune smiled upon me, through no merit of my own. Most are not so lucky. Pride is something i'm happy see fading. Figure pride is shortsighted - the world is too big for pride , unless one really is better than 6 billion or so others. Then there's the question of better how, and in how many aspects.
Oh, and you don't EVEN want to see my knees!

Having just reached this milestone this year, I find it very interesting to remember that we were the generation that wasn't going to get old ! :)

And to a certain extent we haven't, especially compared to generations before us.

I noted recently that Paul in NZ was talking about a push bike race he has to train for. I still play football (soccer) in the old fart's league, every week. 90 minutes of forgetting I'm an old fart ! (We're sponsored by the local funeral director - he's buried 2 of us already. ;) )

I agree that there is a certain level of not caring what others think, but I have always ploughed my own furrow my entire life, so not much has changed.

I do enjoy watching my sons turning into men though - very satisfying !

Probably the biggest dilemma I see is that we are more affluent than either our parents were or our children (probably) will be. At least in this country. Real estate prices have become so ridiculous that soon the only way a young couple will be able to afford a house will be if they inherit it.

This causes some concern, not so much for my kids, but for a whole generation of kids coming through now who have no support from their families.

Possibly the hardest thing is to watch your own kids choosing a career path. She who must be obeyed and I have always insisted that we would not influence them and so far we have managed to stick to that. Our only advice is that they choose a career that they will enjoy and find interesting, and not worry about chasing money. I have always found that money has a way of appearing when you are good at what you do and enjoy it.

What's ahead ? Who knows.

As long as we can stay healthy for as long as possible, anything is possible ! :D
