So I have a 1990 535i, it has an ASC light in the center of the dash...but I have no button...so do I actually have it or is it an empty light?
I have lots of inactive lights in the dash... how do yo know you have ASC?

My guess is empty socket. No sense in making different dash panels for dummy lights. My automatic camaro has a dummy upshift light :D

Thats a bummer, because my manual talks about ASC...well **** I wonder how I can find out, could a dealer tell me?

ASC was available only in '93 and up models, I believe, and therefore never on the 535i.
ASC was replaced with DSC in '01. :p
You have an LSD (or should) and a right foot (presumably)... those combines with common sense is better than any ASC/DSC.

Maybe it was limited to some markets? Kind of like the AWD E34's?

The most obvious way to find out is put the car in some gravel/dirt and go WOT

My '90 535i has provision for both EML & ASC dashlights... but no EML or ASC.
Instrument cluster was preconfigured for those options.

If you dont have the button, you dont have it. Havent you ever spun your tires before?

Our bmw's can't spin their tires...especially Jon K's....

as does my 525i
fact of the matter is the ASC light comes on when you switch the ignition on before starting the car
if it doesn't you don't have ASC
(or if you do it isn't working properly)

Haha, usually resulting in spectators that are either
i) Cheering
ii) Running, ducking and covering from 60mph gravel

Uhh, that chart doesn't list your car as having ASC.

Weird, that sucks I don't have it...wel I mean I thought I did by the chart, I'm at the top of it, 1990 E34 535i, M30 engine...

that chart is for cars that were possibly equipped with it, not of cars that were installed with it by default.

oic...dang so do you think asc was a major thing though..like does ti really help that much, is it an addable option at this point?

ASC is not something that can be cost effectively added afterwards, as far as I am aware.
How important is it ?
That depends on your point of view. Folksam, the Swedish insurance company ( www.folksam.se - they do have an English button) regard it as really important.
According to their interpretation of real crashes, ASC prevents 35% of accidents in the dry, 55% in snow & ice and 65% in the wet.
It is therefore possibly a desirable option, but you need to either buy a late E34 or something younger, like an E39, to get it.

What does the button look like and where would it be located?
Is it a sliding switch next to the shift lever? One position is a snowflake?

It's below your ash tray on the left side, if you have it, you'd see it.
The sliding switch is automatic trans modes

you can check for ASC by the EXTRA throttle body in the engine bay, the one before the main throttle.
if you want something like ASC, then the best option is RaceLogic, which allows custom wheelspin rates and launch control. be ready to shell out a few thousand dollars! http://www.racelogic.co.uk/?show=Traction_Control
ASC+T also had rear brake traction control to correct the car significatly more than just ASC could. IF you have ASC+T, and you hit the button to turn it off, i believe it turns ABS off as well, however you can hold down the button for about 10s and it will deactivate the secondary throttle without screwing with your ABS. this is VERY nice if you want to say, add RaceLogic to your car without the system going haywire.
there are negatives to ASC, in snowy conditions it can leave your car completely helpless as the system pretty much leaves your car in idle no matter where your foot is. i did a 180 in the snow at 10mph thanks to ASC! luckily you can turn it off heh.
