£500 for the white 535i, had it for about 14 months now and, rough that it looks, it's never missed a beat yet.. *touches wood*

£100 for the blue 535i "parts car" - too good to strip for parts, and I now have a new gearbox to go in it so all is good there! It'l need a water pump too, so will owe me around £130 by the time it's back on the road :D

Too much! Bought in january 2003 with 72,000 miles at a bit below wholesale book (about $13,000). However, it was an exceptionally clean local one owner (mature couple with grown children) and dealer properly maintained with new brakes and new radiator and thermostat. Only thing I needed to do at that point was change all fluids

It was the best e34 I had found after looking for 18 months. BTW, it is a better car now after being somewaht over maintained by me. :)

This should be broken into two polls:
How much did you pay for it?
Then how much did you invest in fixing it up?

I spent more than twice what I paid for it into fixing it up in the first two months. Most of it was for necessary maintenance, but some was for treats.

billb

...and bought it with 50k on it in March 1999. We bought it for $20k then. Yes, I know that seems like a lot, but that was trade-in value where my in-laws traded it on a '99 528i, and we bought it for the trade price as part of a package deal. It was a good investment at the time, but the depreciation curve was STEEP! Since then, we've averaged about $1225/year in maintenance/upkeep (as high as $2600 in 2002 for full suspension rework, as low as $425 in 2003).

I would definitely say, since 2002, annual costs have gone down as my level of knowledge of the car has gone up.

Bill--Thanks for knocking me out of the spot of the person who paid the most for their e34. Of course you have had yours much longer, and you didn't pay over book for your like I did, but it still feels good to me that I don't have the highest priced bimmer on the board.

Just a little over $16k after taxes, but would have been that much before taxes if I didn't talk them down to the number we agreed on! ;)

I purchased my 5er about 5 years ago, fell in love with it and my passion for BMWs continues to be just as strong to this date... these are AWESOME cars!

$12500 CAD in April 2003 (about $9500 US back then) with 55000 miles. I've put in about $8000 CAD on her since then, $6000 in the last 8 months.... 2 transmissions in 4 months will do that to you...

$6500USD, 3 months.

(Due to somebody rear ending my Jeep, the e34 really only cost me about $1000(and it still hurt to spend my savings))

Paid £850 for a pristine '87 E28 520i with 95,000 miles in 2003. Drove it 25,000 trouble-free miles on rough roads until I wore out the suspension and brakes, then parked it.

Bought a broken '90 E34 525iA in 2005 for £300. Fixed it and drove it for a year.

Two months ago, I swapped them both for a well-optioned '92 525i 5spd in excellent condition. This one's a keeper.

Paid: $6,000.00
Owned: almost 2 years

My wife's cavalier blew up one fine October morning (actually, it sputtered out, but blew up sounds so much more interesting) and we found out later that day that her home church had a 5 series donated by a laywer for them to sell and add money to their budget. We paid a little more than it was worth and I immediatley bought a Bentley and started working.

The mechanicals are almost sorted, fluid, gaskets, etc... now I'm moving towards the comestics. My pillars need some serious love.

Hold it guys. Stop everything ! :D

The originator of this poll is an AUSSIE which means the poll is in Aussie Dollars.

You can't answer the poll in US dollars, or Norwegian Crowns or even Pounds Sterling.

For it to have any credibility you have to convert to Aussie dollars (=77c US).

Fair's Fair. ;)

When an American posts a poll about miles travelled or miles per gallon, we others all dutifully convert.

Now its your turn.

I demand a re-poll. :D

BTW, I paid AUD $9,000 for mine 3 years ago.

I bought the 95 525i for $6500 out the door with 69K miles on it. Since then, I've spent $400 for a new starter, $300 for tuning it up, $250 new indash stereo, $200 odds /ends ==> $7600 for the car that I want. Not bad. The engine is a little clickity clackity.

how much have people paid for their e34s and how long do they own them for.

I've had mine for 14 months now.
Was lucky to find one in nice conditon for $2800 USD.
Came with all new brakes and rotors, fusable links, new cat and O2 sensor, all new belts and tensioners and the complete level 2 inspection and maintenance repairs.
Car has some nice options as well. Heated seats, ski bag, ft. & Rr. factory mudflaps, tinted windows, nice Pioneer head unit with remote control and disc changer in trunk. I really like the wool (type fabric) seat material too . I thinks this is standard in Germany though, where the PO bought it and had car shipped back to the US.
Reason why it was priced so low was, PO was told it needed A/C repairs totaling $1200-1400. I put a new AC belt on (it was removed due to "noise") and it worked perfectly, no problems at all. So I guess they were being scammed.
I have about $500 in repairs on it, as of now. For new exhaust, water pump/ coolant, fan shroud, fog lights, cabin filter and Misc other small things.
All in all, I'm very happy with it so far.

...that we bought the '93 in '99 (7 years ago already) with 84k mi on it. We paid $12,320 Australian (well, the US equivalent anyway) and were happy with that. Private party one owner local deal with dealer service and full documentation. Picky owner who never let the kids put crap in the back seat - insisted that they put their book bags and the like in the trunk.
I drove 8 different cars in Fresno and Sacramento and determined this was the best combination of a well-maintained and documented car versus the price. In the 7 years I've done the front end bushings then the full front end flush, a couple sets of tires, new radiator, new water pump, hoses, front struts, new dash lcd unit, new battery, couple of guibo disks, had the stereo reconditioned, new idler pulley, O2 sensor, pads rotors pads, tuneups, fluid changes, had the original wheels rechromed, hood struts, fuel pump. I'm probably forgetting a ton of stuff.
It's my wife's car and she just loves it. Particularly the brilliant red.

The e34 was £3k ($5.7 US/ $7.4 AUD / 4500 Euro) in 2000.....

Ran it for 6 years, it owed me nothing over that time and chopped it in when it failed the MOT for a few hundred quid.

On behalf of Zeuk in Oz who wants prices in Aussie Dollars, you can convert your currency in Google. Type "convert {amount} {your currency} to AUD" in the search box. For example: convert 3000 GBP to AUD or convert 3000 USD to AUD

Are you going to take into account regional variations? For example in the UK big engined e34's are pretty worthless. If it's nickasil you will pay for someone to drag it away.... And that's only if they're desperate.

Bought mine in 11/99 for 26,000 US. 38,000 miles on it. The dealer was a buick dealer who took it on trade and it sat on their lot for 3-4 months. I kept driving by every once in a while and finally decided to check it out. The sales guy thought it was 5 speed because he didn't know there was 6 speed. I had to show him the knob on the stick. The heater core was leaking bad so the salesman said they would fix it so he took it to the BMW dealer down the street. Man was the sales manager pissed.
