snow tires:it's about that time of year again

I've never had to drive my '90 535i in the snow, and this is going to be the first time it will have to get the job done for the winter. I am on a limited budget and have been looking at used snow tire/wheel sets. I have read about what y'all like in terms of tires. I'm interested to know what people think about just having two snow tires in the rear. I did this with a Mercedes 240D and it worked just fine for the winter. Didn't have a problem. Can I expect the same with the E34? I know 4 is better, but I'm interested to hear from folks who only used two on the rear.

Also, if anyone has a set that will at least make it for another season or two, I may be interested.
