I finally replaced the stock radio with a JVC AR560. This is my first stereo install and it took me the whole afternoon. :p i followed the instructions on bmwe34.net and info on this forum. Connected the high-level out to the harness. I know using the low-level out or a PAC is better, but this is more straight forward. For the HU, I was thinking about getting the Sony 1333 but Vanguard on this forum recommended the JVC Arsenal. So I checked out the Arsenal series and liked it. Bought the AR560 (US$130) and a BMW wiring harness (US$5 + shipping) on ebay and bought a antenna adapter from Bestbuy (US$12).

Result:
JVC AR560 sounds great. The black face plate, black buttons and red chars matches the interior. I wish the LED screen is red too. See pics. It has an AUX out and ipod connection at the back (didn't use).

The bads:
1) At the beginning, the new HU volume was very low. I checked and rechecked the wiring and searched for answer on this forum. Turned out the issue was not the wiring, it's the HU itself. By default, the HU's FAD setting is 0. When I set it to Front 1 or Rear 1, the volume is back to normal (louder). No idea why.
2) After stereo installation was completed, I noticed the OBC LED becomes very dark. May be I blew the OBC bulb? :(

As far as the OBC darkness, the same thing happen to you that did to me.

When installing mine, I guess I banged it around a little too much, busted a bulb. Replaced both side ones from the dealer, works great now.

Cheap easy fix. Just sucks taking the dash apart again to get the OBC out.
