E34 HID pic request

please post pics of any temp from the e34 projecter low beam. i want to see how they look in the evening/night.

i searched and only saw maybe two.

Im planning on going 6000k but if i see a 4300k or 5000k that looks better i may go with that. these will be put on the euro ellipsoids(that i have not purchased yet)

Very old picture. I'm running 6000k now. Remember that over time, it will get progressively 'cooler'.

Also remember that 4300/5000 has physically more light output than 6000k+. The blue/purple tinge you see on HIDs come from the light cutoff and not really the actual temperature itself.

The higher the number, the less brightness of light and more saturation of color.

4300=best lighting, less blue
5000=little more color of blue, less light than the 4300
6000=still less light than the 5000, but more color of blue
8000=color turns to purple shade, still less light than 6000
10,000=purple lights, can't see ****

Jr. I'm wondering whether Jay is implying that the light output and or color will change over time.

There is a difference in the light over time. Early E39's with Xenons that had to have the bulb replaced for one reason or another would experience an uneven color balance. Dealerships would replace the bulb with another only to find out the same result. They would replace both bulbs just so they would match for the customer. Afterwards, they found that the replacement would "burn-in" and match after several hours of use.

The color will change somewhat, but since most men are color blind what do we care?

Thanks for the explanation Jr. I'm guessing changing two HID bulbs at the dealership would set an e39 owner back a pretty penny. However, if you're concerned about the color difference that much, you probably have some spare change kicking around.

We cook the first turkey in October (Canadaian TG), then we celebrate our relationship with the neighbours to the south and cook another.

Ahhhh, American pride tastes good even if your a Canuck :D

Sorry to hijack the thread Boone, Im still running the old ancient halogens. Id be very interested toi know where your getting your HID kit tho, just an ebay set-up?

I've been looking and researching HID's also. There are numerous "kits" available from Hong Kong and Japan, but the ones that other M5 owners are raving about is the McCullogh (sp?) brand.

After it's all said and done, you will pay about $250 for euro-ellipsoids, or you can use the standard ellipsoid lights that came stock on some models. You cannot use the kit on the free form halogen headlamps.

The cost of the kit is about $250, so it's a 500 dollar bill for those who have free form lights and about $250 for upgrading your existing ellipsoids.

I am running Phillips ballasts and bulbs - great products in my opinion, the best of the best.

My sister has Hella ballasts and bulbs from an X5.

I run phillips and can say, thats the way to go. 6000k is extremely sweet.

However if you HAD to go cheap, I've worked with Genesis twice now and they're great.

That's extremely hard to believe. McCulloch... the same company that makes and distributes home doodads like steamers is synomous with Philips. AFAIK, McCulloch is an Asian/Taiwanese company. Call me a skeptic, but I'd really like to be proven wrong here with a bit of proof... though not in a flame baiting way, JR :)

Now, if by synonymous you mean that in the world of McCulloch HID they use some Philips components, that's easier to swallow. If that's the case, then I go back to my first hand experience with several of their kits, including the 'newer' ignitor-separate versions that just aren't on par, quality wise. Make no mistake though, I'd take them over much cheaper Chinese (read: not Taiwanese) counterparts any day.

Dave M bought my last 9005 set a few weeks ago. Let's see how it goes :)

jon K, can you possibly post a pic of your phillips set-up? Ive got euro ellipsoids and want to see just how much trouble it is for installation. Also, mind if I ask where you got your Phillips kit from?

Hold on here. Are we talking about two different brands here? I haven't worked with "McCullogh/McCullough" but have worked with McCulloch, ordering directly from them. Either way, where do you see that they are one in the same (with Philips) or utilize their components completely? I'd like to debunk this myth too. Supporting evidence please! :)

If that's the company, then we can have an independant third party verify the item. "Dave M" has them and can attest that they are nowhere near Philips quality or components.

They look like a quality product.
