re-torque head bolts

Has anyone ever had the occasion to re-torque the head bolts? I have an oil leak and not sure where it is but a dealer parts guy said it may be a good idea to re-torque the head bolts. I was thinking if I was going to re-torque I would replace them altogether and re-torque. I don't want to go so far as to take the head off because it is a pain in the as%. I was going to make sure the bolts were all torqued. I see the specs in the bentley that says that step 2 & 3 are an 80 degree turn. Step one is the actual torque.

Any thoughts or do you recommend removal. I don't really want to go this far as the valve lockdown and removal is a timing nightmare. This isn't a chevy of ford. Can I go throught he tightening sequence and go say 5-10 degrees?

if you want to take the chance of busting the bolts off than retorque. You should remove all the bolts and install new bolts and torque according to the manual but you have to make sure the threaded holes are completly free of dirt and oul or you can strip the threads out. You cannot replace 1 bolt at a time, the torque method in the manual will not be accurate without a new head gasket.

i would not mess with torque to yield head bolts, like jeff said results would not be the same without a new gasket to squash. dohc motors (m42/44/50/52/60/62.....) need ether special tools or a good understanding to set up the cam timeing, i've tried to walk a few people through it without the tools but it's hard to explain the whole proceedure, and i can't control the results so ill say the tools are on ebay and are cheep

oil leak where? Never trust a parts guy.

I agree that an inaccurate reading would result from not having a new gasket but still new bolts are a better alternative than retorquing.

It sounds as if you should do a top end seal replacement.

What does the average top end seal cost in dealer dollars versus knowledgeable mom and pop shop. What do you call the tools necesary to perform the job so I can find them on Ebay. Any help would be appreciated. I do have a Bentley but as everyone knows the pitfalls are not indicated. What kind of problems can I expect? I really need the help.
