the point of it depends on the course.
on a flat open course like that the point is to look and sound cool. and he did a VERY good job at that indeed.
on a winding road where you would need to keep the car at a lower speed in order to stay in control however (this is easiest with RWD), you can turn the car into the turn at high speed with power oversteer, then as the car begins sliding sideways turn the wheel the other way and understeer the car around the turn facing in, using the power of the rear wheels to keep the car from going off the road.
BMWs like ours are generally heavy, and drifting would put a massive amount of stress on the suspension and the tires, its best suited to M3 lightweights like the E30 and E36 CSL. there are quite a few lightweight jap cars with RWD, and these do an exceptional job when the suspension is modified correctly as its much easier and faster to acquire control at the end of the drift with a light car.
mazda miatas and rotary coupes with a few modifications make great drifters thanks to the low weight and high power to weight ratio.

I'd say the sound alone is bad enough to make my hair stand on end. Terrible.
Theres a guy who works in the same complex as I do with an M3 that goes clinkety clank whenever he drives by, terrible noises coming from his engine compartment... You know what I see every few days if it's clear and people watching? Him spinning his wheels in the parking lot.
Whoopdee doo.
PS- Ladies aren't impressed by this stupid ****, especially when your car catches on fire like slavic bob's E34 from a few weeks ago..

ive never ever seen a car able to make this much smoke so quickly...
I could see someone doing this to impress a friends, but not make a sport out of it.

If you want to run the numbers a 535i with a 5 speed has a 50/50 weight distribution. Those are good numbers to start with but you'd need a lot more hp to get it drift like that Audi.

It was funny when Slavic Bob's car caught fire - I bet he felt really cool and clever at that point.

it does indeed beat the **** out of cars, and the heavier the car is the more it hurts. also you go through tires like gasoline.

You can pretty much drift anything w/ a rwd and enough power. And I really don't see how it stresses anything other than tires.
