lol auto gearboxes without lubricant, you can buy a m3 supercharge it, and then buy an 330ci. but you can't teach a dumbass how to think.;)

18 years & almost 68,000 miles of stop-start driving, frequent short journeys & never legally going over 40mph, my auto 'box is still going strong without ever having a fluid change..
Don't intend to change it now either, I know of too many local cars that've stopped working after a fluid change..

DigitalEcstasy - ok, so you don't like auto boxes, but perhaps you could've worded it better huh?
I'd rather a manual than an auto, but my Mum occasionally drives my car, and she can't manage a clutch pedal any more so I have to live with the auto - and t.b.h. it's not so bad really - although mine does spend 95% of it's time in M mode! :D
Think of it as a clutchless manual ;)

spoke with kurt yesterday about the new hp-18 he is building for me and he said he ships with no dextron in them and to remind me to tell my indy to fill it back up, but he also said that the way he builds with the lubricants he uses, they could run with no fluid at all for long while.....jes sayin

I love it coz there are so many people who share the same passion for the same model BMW as me!!

Now, to vent:

I took my poor E34 for its first drive in nearly 4 months today. She is unregistered, runs on 5 cylinders, brings up "beam", "Tail light", "Lic Plate Light" errors (for various reasons), stalls all the time, clunks in the front suspension, and generally looks like a $2 crack-whore!! :( :( :(

She's been sitting under a tree for all this time, and the tree-sap has stained the paint, and when combined with brake-dust, has pitted the chrome lip of the wheels. The drainage channels down the front guards, around the bootlid, and around the wipers are full of leaves and '****', and even after $20 at the high-pressure car-wash, she is still a mere shadow of her former self.

I know a bit more can be done to limit the damage (ie weekly washes and the like), but it seems all in vain!! I need to put her in a shed somewhere for a few months (or years), away from the elements... That way I can slowly make progress on the quest for Immaculance (if there is such a word).

Sorry... Its just so ****ing disheartening :(

it seems an illusion. Add tree sap, remove a cylinder, add electrical (LKM) prob, sway bar link? issue and we have an e34 that needs some love.

Thankfully, you're realistic and realize it needs some an attention. These babes will go a long way to serve you right, just give her what she needs !!

On the topic of manual trans, the original ZF 5 speed is still tickin strong after 525,000km. I regularly hit 6000+rpm in 2nd without a dispute :D

Oh yeah i forgot to say why i love bimmer.info
because there are people here with some intellect that actually have a frigging idea what they are talking about, unlike that board.

anyway I realise that they can go for a long time without fluid changes, however i also realise that they aren't sealed for life and that the fluid will not last forever and they aren't so complicated that transmission specialists have no idea how they work (like the dude in that forum was suggesting).
I also realise that gears in a gearbox need lubrication, as i am sure most of us in this board do.
I like this board because the majority of conversations aren't just "check out my sick rims, bodykit, shiftnob, stereo or whatever" and when you ask a question it'll get answered by someone who has an idea.

got board of the shameless dealer knob polishing after the first page and stopped reading, the only thing the service bay at the dealer is good for is if you have warranty work, i have cleaned up enough dealer messes to know if it's not new enough to still have warranty on it they don't know their asses from a hole in the ground

know what you mean, The thread culminated with a guy saying that Auto Transmission fluid doesn't lubricate. The argument was mainly the whole you shouldn't change lifetime fluid in the transmission.
