I was reading an article a couple of weeks ago about that, and they propose a very ingenious solution to get rid of these bots.
In the registration form, you can add a field that is hidden to the users, so no real user can fill it, but because the bots are not aware of that, they will fill it. So, now you can automatically ban any member that has filled this field. The solution is elegant, easy to implement, and is giving very good results to the guy who proposed it.
