My buddy just picked it up - it's a 1969 VW Squareback. Its a bit of a rat rod and we think he should keep it that way. Its got some rust on the bodywork, but the structure is great. He's not looking to restore it, just make it that much cooler.

Its SLAMMED on torsion bar suspension. Has 911 bucket seats. It's a charmer!

It gets so much attention from people to! "What kind of car is that!"

1500 cc air cooled engine I believe.
Can use a lot of parts from the old Porsche 4-cyinder engines.

One of my first cars was the old VW beetle with 1200 cc and 34 HP.
That were nice times to repair, got the engine out in less than 20 minutes :D

when i was in college in late 60s-early 70s if you had $500 to spend the vw squareback was THE dependable ride. bulletproof, inexpensive to fix (except heater boxes).

I had 2 1963 variant squarebacks with the 1500s dual carb motors in them. I liked the body much better than this newer body. The early variant had a shorter more rounded hood and shorter fenders, no gas cap on the fender it was under the hood, smaller nicer tailights and bumpers.... Kind of like comparing a 58 karmann ghia to a 60 and then 69, each newer got uglier due to bumper and tailight changes in the US.http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/63front1.jpg

id be real tempted to do a rotary conversion on it if it was mine, mazdatrix or racingbeat use to sell a kit to stab a 12a or 13b on place of a bug motor, a sweet street port or maybe a bridge port side draft carb motor would make that thing insane, id hate to think how evil it would be with a box stock 3rd gen twin turbo at 240 odd hp, ****er would even last a long time and maybe get some decent mpg

I am still trying to convince him to put a VR6 rear engine in it. The same day we picked up the squareback we also picked up a 2.8L 24v VR6. Hrmpmmmm.
