I've got a e34 1995 525i. I'm doing a coolant change and wanted to change the thermostat. Done previous thread searches and didn't see any pictures on the location of the thermostat. I have a bentley manual and it doesn't mention removing anything to access it.

How many bolts do you need to remove to access the thermostat?

Thanks in advance and happy new years.

The T-stat housing is part no. 4 here:- http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HB52&mospid=47370&btnr=11_1503&hg=11&fg=35

I'm going to change my thermostat soon. I think the thermostat housing has 4 bolts. Some people remove the fan to access the lower bolts.

aluminum one, the original was some type of plastic. Maybe yours has been done, but reports are the plastic ones are harder to get leak-free results. I'm pretty sure you need the fan off for clearance, if so you need to make a tool to undo the bolts, search here, I made one from a big old rusty screwdriver I had laying around,

Good luck,

No need to remove the fan, that's a nightmare in its own right sometimes. The lower 2 bolts are a bit of a fiddle but with normal sized hands it can be done quite ok.

Gosh look at the clock, only 3 minutes to go, better kiss my wife! Happy new year everybody!!!

I had to remove the fan... guess my monster hands just too big.
The fan removal was easy. Put a 32mm open end wrench (got mine at Sears) and turn it clockwise (as you face the car). It spins off quite easily. With the fan removed, I could get my monster hands in there to remove the two bottom bolts of the thermostat housing.

The plastic ones are easily broken when you're putting it back on
