Mine is pretty stock except for the power chip (supposedly, I havent checked it myself), and right now its got a pair of after market stainless exhaust tips welded in place. I keep seeing Eisemann and Supersprint exhaust mentioned, but what is a good after market system to get for the 540i?

This (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=554043&highlight=exhaust) might help.. I personally also went with a Magnaflow 12XXX series, dual in/out with the resonator deleted.
It has a nice deep rumble on startup and a roar at WOT. It can get "boomy" inside the cabin b/c of no resonator, especially in slow traffic situations. Consequently, you might want to try with the stock resonator in place first, to see if you like it before having it removed.

Friend of mine has the Supersprint on his 540 wagon. Looks well built and sounds nice, even more so with his air filter kit. It's just about right, not too load, just so. If I were to buy one for my own 540,I'd go Supersprint.

Wait, so you got the dual out Magnaflow? Did you have to trim the bumper to fit?

Makes me wonder if the dual 2.5"s would fit...

This is a pic of my set up. Its Magnaflow single 3" in, duel 3" tips. Fit perfectly with no cutting required. Still running res, but car has a nice, low, understated rumble around town, and no interstate drone. Really opens up at WOT.

That looks great. I'm planning on doing the magnaflow/high flow cat and maybe a resonator delete, but that may be too loud. Those 3" tips look mean

That looks just like mine!! I guess mine ARE 3" tips"..:D Anyway, same setup but a dual in/out 2.5" didn't want the "Y-pipe" to the muffler and no resonator of course.. BTW, the trimming was less than a 1/4" as my muffler/tips are slightly more apart than BlueM60's..

Ditto... after installing my B&B it increased/renewed the love for my 5... though the future wifey hates it...
With most systems there is only cutting welding if you do the cats and do not use BMW or DEC ones. If I didnt do the cats the B&B is a simple bolt up install.

I bought that muffler a few years ago for my mkiii Supra turbo actually. there was a local exhaust shop down the street and they had some mufflers on a display. I just liked that one and picked it. It doesnt have to be a speicific model, just find a style you like and it can be made to fit.
