92 525 O2 replacement

Any help appreciated. Crawled under the 92 525i last night to replace the O2 sensor. Had been getting the interminent check engine light. Have the socket that goes over the top of the sensor.

Found the sensor was located into the pipe on top of the pipe and impossible to get the socket on. Does one have to drop the emission pipes to get a socket on this thing? Thanks in advance

That is what I did. Dropped the whole thing from tailpipe to the 2 flanges at the bottom of the manifold. Required heat to break the O2 free.
