I'm replacing my fuel pump today and when I pull out the sending unit I notice a hole in the bottom of it. Does this mean I have to replace it as well, or is it of no consequence?
Here's the picture:

BUMP:
Can anyone tell me what the plastic tube that extends out from the sending unit does? Its clearly broken off in my case. Car seems to run fine without it, but if it serves an important function, I'll buy a new one.

As we don't want to see your post go unanswered, I'll add that I don't imagine its too big a concern :)
I think the worst that can happen is that your gauge might be more sensitive to fuel sloshing around inside the tank without that tube. Other than that I don't see much reason to worry.
