It's supposed to do that. A warning for conditions conducive to "black ice" on the road.

I find it amusing, since it only happens about twice each winter here.
I thought black ice was a rapper.

I live where its cold and it does get annoying. My e28 also had the same setup. Wish there was an easy way to make it stop.

see if you can get a refund on your taxes - you shouldn't have to pay for that weather where you are!

They are forecasting another 36-38 degree scorcher here today - lots of snakes about !
If only it would rain !

I love it when that thing dings. lets me know the air is nice and cool, usually makes me punch it a couple more times. THe supercharger loves the cold air, when that thing dings I feel the full power. I was wondering about this too, as I dont think theres ever been black ice in pismo beach.

I like the warning.
Being nice and warm while driving, a person tends to forget just how cold it really is and from experience I know that I can't count on being able to spot ice, especially black ice.
I've been passed a few times by people that aren't aware only to see them spun out in the median or off to the side after an exaggerated lane change.
Usually I only get the warning once at the beginning of my drive and again each time I start the car thereafter.

i didn't think that the warning was for black ice. It comes on at 3C, which I think is the temperature where pavement starts to become slippery, and grip is reduced...It's still above freezing, but cold enough for traction loss.

I think black ice arrives when it around 0 degrees F. It is caused by condensation from car exhausts freezing on the ground. I have had a few encounters with it over the years and it is a real pisser. You really can't see it and don't know it is there until you skid.

it is a "there may be ice on the road" warning.Mine goes of at 3 deg C or below, and it only goes of once per trip, you can watch the temp on your dash display of course. You can stop the ding....but you lose the ding for everything.I think its cool...though when the car ddings at me i always fear the worst.....my heart rate doubles in 1 second
Black ice is any mosture on the road that has frozen overnight...its called black because its clear and therefore invisible.....
here is a little quiz
what road features or structures are likely t freeze before others?
What is the unusual phenonomen that occurs when you "drive on ice" as compared driving on a grippier serface...aprt from the distinct lack of traction?

Just guessing here, but:
Question 1: Bridges freeze first. Edit: and low areas? Edit2: shady areas mebbe?
Question 2: You go faster? (less rolling resistance?) havent learned about that in physics yet to i dun know.

yes bridges culverts etc lose heat faster so will freeze first, but shady area too for two reasons, dont dry out during day and sre cooler to begin the night....when you hit ice it goes deathly quiet...no tyre noise at all....

well, the spinning of tires on ice usually isn't quiet :p - or the screams of your passengers!

I object to this racial profiling of ice.
It should not be a crime to ICE while black.
You don't see radios with Vanilla Ice warnings, or white ice warnings...
this is unconscionable behavior, and must be stopped

Mine doesn't ding.

38 F is the temperature in which ice can form in the shadows
Its a warning to tell you to take it easy

It's a good thing. Why would you not want to be warned if there is possible danger from ice on the roads. I know when I hear it I am reminded to review the road conditions. In fact, I think it should be standard equipment on all cars. I am serious here.

Maybe my dinger broke off in the cold... :)

i am sure mine dings only once...if it actually ice rather than just a bit of frost on the road it goes really quiet and smooth....

The 38* chime does get annoying as that chime is pretty loud. Driving around for a couple hours today it went off several times & was louder then I'd like. I wrapped the chime in my 535i with duct tape to quiet it down & the Touring chime will soon get the same treatment.

My dinger broke so I never hear the sound, but it has scared me a few times lately when the message popped up below the speedometer. Why can't it be May already so I don't have to deal with this??
