in Ginger, our '95 525ia (first time the wife and I have left the little one overnight with my folks :( ). Drive to Charlotte via backroads (hwy. 1/15-501/24-27) and get 29.8 obc mpg, average about 55 mph. Drive back yesterday via I-85/40, get 30.6 obc mpg, average about 68 mph, light-footed.
Love this car more every year...

Yep, this weekend my wife and I took our '01 525iA from Wilmington to Gatlinburg Tennessee to attend a friend's wedding. We too left our little one at Grandma and Grandpa's house for the first time :( .
Our trip took us down US74 to I-95 to I-20 to I-26 to I-40. It was a 450 mile trip. Speeds were in the 70-80 mph range on the interstate. OBC mileage was 30.7. Actual calculated mileage (with stop and go in Gatlinburg) was 29.7 mpg.
Nothing like a BMW 5er on the open road, confidence inspiring, especially through the mountains. That car handles like a dream through the twisties.

Had a wedding to go to also! But it was only in Cary, so didn't get the enjoyment y'all got.

SBCNCSU - I'm at NCSU. ;)
525i is really great on gas. That's roughly the same mileage I used to get in my E39 528i. My last car ('02 Buick Regal, 3.8L V6) got 30-33 on the highway, depending on where I drive.
My 540... it's... uh... great on gas... it gets <COUGH ahem>
