Can the blower motor be purchased separately with the cages? I have an 89 535i
Did you try the places I suggested? I know it's avail. for MB which uses a very similar setup.

The entire assembly is balanced at the factory, the cages aren't removable.

I purchased a bosch replacement motor for 160Cdn. The complete assembly was 340cdn.I cut the shafts on the old motor and removed the cages. Then using an appropriately sized socket gently tapped the cages into position on the new motor.I put them on a little too close and had to move them back out. That was a little more difficult.Boiling water dribbled over the inner hub of the cages seemed to expand the plastic enough to get them to move with some gentle prying. As for balance,it seems fine ,has been working without problems for the last two months.

I bought the entire unit off of ebay, it wasn't expensive, and so far it's lasted over 2 years, and it's always on.

I bought one off ebay fairly cheap from vines. Used but comes w/guarntee. I have had for approx. 1 year and still good so far. Much better option than going new in my opinion, I forget what new price was but remember it was scary!
I also remember seeing somewhere, directions on how to rebuild/refurbish motor yourself if you'd prefer. It may have been a search of this site I found that but if not Google it.
