Remember that a lot of research went into that intake design, and the majority of people who muck around with it succeed in getting more noise, less power, and more junk in the crankcase of a motor that is known for lunching bearings.

looks like some sort of ram air setup to direct pressurized air (at speed) into the air box. Looks cool to me...

Helmholtz resonator - designed to absorb harmonics at a specific frequency. Quiets the intake without affecting flow.

so i guess that answers his question, discarding = louder intake with no loss of flow.

I removed it today and i didn't noticed any power loss! But the sound is great!!!

2.5L subarus have the same thing, 2 of them actually. Those intakes are LOUD with that stuff blocked off.
Like flipping the air cleaner lid over on Dad's Buick,in the old days.

make sure the hood dont leak in the rain or it causes hydrolock...lol
