i lost my keys...

So i'm at my school and i just realized some how I managed to lost my keys. Do you know how much it costs to get another key? is there some inside secret? can i call bmw?

i was quoted $300 to get my key made by a locksmith. I was hoping another cheaper alternative.

pretty sure you can take the VIN + title to BMW and they can get you a key.
it might take too long but should be less than $300

My dad had a few keys made for his e32, Had to send BMW his Title, Registration, Copy of DL, vin # and contact information which i think he faxed. I'm pretty sure thats how much it cost. I think for a new key cut with the light in it from bmw was somewhere from 35-60 bucks, still not 300 and sorry i can't remember how much it cost :(. I know this won't help much but might be a good alternative...

You guys must have early '95s without EWS-II if your dealer can cut you a key that will start your car.

my dealer didn't cut it, he had to order it from a shop in new jersey that does laser cutting.

I guess I was thinking $35 was a bit cheap and someone else said it just took a trip to their local dealer. We never did cut the newer keys, but the ones with EWS-II (anti-driveaway-protection), the gold-non-magnetic keys, have a chip in them and your car can only handle ten different chips or keys before you have to change the whole lock system. I thought those were somewhat more expensive than $35. The system may have phased in January of 1995 as a government requirement. I'm not sure of the date. I know those have to come from BMW NA. That's all I was saying.

{As it's already been stated...the 525i/iT and the V8s have different types of keys...they have an embedded chip that is programmed with an ISN (individual serial number) which has to match the EWS control module and ECU. If they don't, the car will remain immobilized (fuel & ignition is disabled) until all 3 units communicate with each other.}

Nope, $35 is about in line. If you go to the online parts database (E34 key diagram/part nbr index for 1/95-up build date (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HJ63&mospid=47414&btnr=41_0044&hg=41&fg=40)) and look up the diagram and part nbr index for the keys....you'll see that the 4 keys for cars with EWS II (build date 1/95-up have an embedded chip inside)...go for $37-$56:


* $56.36 - illuminated (general) master key (#14 in diagram below)
* $45.48 - (general) master key (#15 in diagram below)
* $37.67 - valet/service key (#16 in diagram below)
* $40.46 - spare key (#17 in diagram below)

This is what the illuminated (general) master key, spare key, and service/valet key for the 1/95-up key looks like for the 525i/iT...the V8s (definitely the 540i) have a different type key that looks like the e39/e38 keys.

My $35 bucks was for the master illuminated key. :D

I guess I got lucky I found a cheap place. Especially since it included overnight shipping.

Our Touring (6/95) came with the illuminated master & a plastic spare. The plastic spare will start the car so it either has a chip in it or I had the master in my pocket. I had a locksmith make a spare that will start the car if the master key is in the car.

well... who every mentioned murphey's law is right.

someone did turn in my keys at the school a week after I had lost it. Not only that, but the door I busted open (because I had lost the keys to my room as well) was the same amount as what it costed me to get my new key (40 bucks).

My wife paid $72 + shipping at the dealer today for an illuminated master key (51-21-8-205-311) for our 95 Touring. Realoem shows it at $56. Are the prices in their diagrams current list price?

EWS master key (with the inbuilt remote for c'locking) is over $300 Aud in Australia.

Sealed (newer type remote key ie. X5) retails for over $400 Aud

Non-remote spare (still EWS chipped) $165.

Non EWS light key $60 Aud
Non EWS non iluminated $24 Aud

All Australia BM's after 1/95 have EWS.
