I just made a hand shake deal with my neighbor on a beautiful 2001 740il (silver with gray leather). He is only the second owner and it has been well cared for driven mostly highway miles to work. He purchased the car with 30,000 miles 3 years ago and it now registers 84,700. I did the Car Fax and it was whistle clean. Kelly Blue book was listing the car in a private sale in excellent condition at $21,800. He was asking $21,000. I offered him $20,000 and he accepted! I probably will pick the car up on Monday. I think this will be my early birthday present at I turn 60 on March 10th. Hey this car has passenger and driver controls for heated seats and massaging your ass. It works on one cheek and then alternates to the other. Hey wait a minute.... how about that knob on the dash marked "BJ"? Nah, just foolin' around. As soon as I take possession I will try to get some pictures of this beauty.

Congratulations, and pre- happy birthday :)

That thing must be loaded with luxuries. Are you retired yet? Either way, touring around in that thing will be a blast, a comfortable blast at that.

(Un)fortunately, when folks my age are 60, we'll be looking at a nice hybrid, electric, dung, nuclear or human powered touring car. You buggers had all the jobs AND pensions AND all the fun ;) (at least those in Canada).

Have fun with it,

Dave M

My dad bought one, it's quite a car apperently. I don't get to drive it much, yet I'm the one who washes it.
lol...

My parents have one as well, it has to be one of the most beautiful and well made cars I've ever driven/washed ;)

Trade me. You know you want to. I'm also not opposed to leaving it to me in your will.

Manual or slushbox?

I believe in Europe (and other countries?) one could purchase a 7-series with a stickshift. In fact, if anyone has ever seen the first Transporter movie, the car featured is a stickshift 7-series. Anywho, congrats on the wonderful machine. I love the shape and elegance they have.

the late e38s haul major ass, indecently fast for a 4200# pig, i don't like the ass kneading seats even a little, don't know why they didn't design something more useful like a fart sucker that vents to outside the car

That distant shuffling noise you hear is the sound of 400 bimmer.info participants all rushing to be the first to patent the idea.

Sounds like a very nice car Al. You'll have to get someone to drive you around so you can enjoy that plush, roomy back seat.

Post something in the Beemer forum as it could certainly use some activity. I'll answer over there.

I've heard the Transporter manual 7 series (and all others) were custom jobs.

Have you ever tried the ass kneaders? Sounds like a kinda cool idea to me.

yes that's why i don't like them, in the manual they have a noble sounding purpose, in practical use it's damn annoying

Yeah, I've seen both 7 Series BM's and Merc Limos with manual boxes in Italy.

congratulations

e38s IMO are the best looking bmws
i still regret selling my 728i (e38)..i miss the smooth take off, the comfy seats and the lovely Inline 6 sound (740s sound different though and got different attitude).

suprisingly e38s feel sporty and handle very well for thier size, they r fun to drive..and you will be having the striptronic gear shifting mode to play with and have more fun.
