Tachometer cuts on and off!

My tachometer on my 89 520i will work sometimes and then all of a sudden you can be driving and it will stop working and the inspection light with flash. Than maybe 5 minutes later it will work for maybe 30 seconds. The time intervals vary each time but it seems weird to me. Can anyone help me out with this problem? Thanks

the tacho has nothing to do with the diff sensor, i think ur mixing it up with the speedo

the fact that the inspection light also flashes would lead me to believe there is something wrong with the instrument cluster
