Well the diagonosis of my M50 running cold was correct from you guys on here ... it seems it was the tstat after all.
Had a bit of trouble getting the cooling fan off but managed it eventually with another pair of hands, and the rest of it went alright. My car had a paper gasket in the tstat housing, whereas the later ones have a rubber one... my bmw dealer said hes never sold the paper gasket and the rubber one superceeds it.
Well the rubber one he gave me was no use as my tstat housing doesnt have the groove cut into it that gasket requires ! I ended up making my own from gasket paper as the dealer had no paper ones in stock. Hopefully it will hold up ok, I will keep an eye on it.
I'm happy to report the car warms up much faster now, and the water temp doesn't go down once its warm, even on long downhills with heater on! yay !
Im really hoping the mpg might improve a bit but I'm not holding my breath on that one lol
