Reverse lights, fog lights not working

I have a E34 1994 525iSE. When I put the gear into reverse, I get an error like LIC PLATE WARNING message. Got somebody to check out the reverse lights and they are not working when in gear and the licence plate lights switch off. Take it out of gear and the LIC plates lights works again when the lights are on.. The same problem happens when I switch on the rear fog lights.

Any clues on what can be wrong.

Do you mean that for the licence plate lights and for the rear fog lights, that they work fine except that being in reverse gear turns them off?

WHen the lights are on, the licence plate lights are also (so they should be). Put the gear into reverse and they switch off. The reverse lights do not even come on. The same happens when I switch on the rear fog lights. The licence plate lights go off and the fog lights don't even come on either.
