tyre bead re sealed

Hey Guys, Put on a thread earlier about my front tyre going flat and got told to get the beads re sealed with bead sealer, Is it easy to do yourself ? or do you need to take the wheel to a tyre specialised to get this done ? how is this procedure done if you do it yourself ?

has to be done at a tire dealer, unless you have a Coats tire machine in your garage

Didn't read the earlier thread but I had a slow leaker last week. The tire guy dismounted the tire to check the condition of the bead and bead seat on the rim as these are my 'winter' tires/wheels and the wheels are pretty beat up.

He replaced the valve stem and cleaned all of the bead area of the rim. Since the factory silver coating was missing in places on the bead area of the rim, he spray painted it to help fill in the gaps.

Knock on wood, the tire is still at the same pressure a week later versus losing 2-5 lbs/day previously.

local tire shop here uses grease to seal the things, even on new rims/tires. Hacks id say huh?

Grease! Like wheel bearing grease? I guess he doesn't get any high-powered cars that could spinn the rim on the bead...

I don't like the idea of having a long-lasting oil in constant contact with my rubber tire. I would be concerned with the oil breaking down the rubber, especially in such a vital area like the bead.

My E34 had factory chrome wheels and when the chrome started to crack and peel, they leaked. The tire shop cleaned the bead as best they could and used a "sealer" of some sort to get a leak free seal.
On a parts car I have, the steel wheels were corroded pretty badly and I had some junk tires put on the wheels just to be able to move the parts car around. When they installed the junk tires, the tire shop boys said there's no way a bead like that would hold air, so they put the sealer on those (looked like black RTV) and the parts car has been on inflated tires ever since.
