1990 535i trans problem

this / is more toward winfred...i have a 1990 535i that i redid per your forum from before when i put it back together i did the hard start to clear the computers , then all it does in the "e" mode is saty in 1 gear , if i switch it to "m" mode i can up and downshift with the shifter , is is a computer failure where i need to replace the tcm?

Do you see in the cluster the gear and mode indicated?

And there is the gear indication like D-1-2-3....
and the mode is then E-M-S or E-M, which you can select with the small switch to the right of the gear lever.

If that is not indicated in the cluster, then your system is confused and you have to clean the gear selector switch and the S-E-M switch or whatever your switch has.
