Ive been reading up on a few of the engines and Ive been told that the very very late E34 540 came with a non-vanos M62 4.4 but I always thought that the M62 4.4 only started in the E39?
Can anyone shed some light on this?
No, they didnt. They do fit though.
But no, they didn't.

In Europe the E34 was available from Feb. 1988 at first only with the six cylinder engines as 520i (129HP), 525i (170HP), 530i (188HP) and 535i (211HP)
The Diesel 524td (115HP) came out in March 1988.
In September 1988 the M5 came with 315HP. In April 1990 the M50 4-valve engines were introduced., which had in the 520i 150HP and in
the 525i 192HP.
Smallest engine was the 518i with 4 cylinders and 113HP, which later was replaced by the newer M43 engine with 115HP. From September the Touring came onto the market, and the 4-wheel drive 525ix as well as new Diesel engines 525td and 525tds one month later. From May 1992 a new engine in the M6 had 340HP, from September that year the M50-engines got more torque by the VANOS technology.
One month later the V8 M60 was introduced in the 530i 218HP and in 540i 286HP
Production of the older engine type in 530i and 535i was stopped. From 1995 the 518g Touring was sold, which had a bivalent drive (fuel and gas).
All these market introduction dates refer to the German market.
So for the E34 series only M60B30 and M60B40 were produced.
I looked up it just to make sure, and I think what you might have read was wikipedia. It said the 3.5 L M62B35 was introduced in the 1996 535i. That is correct, but the 1996 model wasn't e34. It really wasn't a 1996 either, technically its a 97 as BMW made no 1996 5 series.
Correct me if I'm wrong someone.
EDIT: Shogun isn't it the M60B40? M60B50 is news to me.
EDIT EDIT: Oh haha, you fixed it while I wrote this :) :)

In Oz there were certainly a lot of E39s made in 1996 sold. Would BMW really have stopped producing 5 series cars for a whole year ? - hard to imagine.

E39 sales started in Germany November 1995.

The 10/95 M-Sport still has your typical M60B40, and they're some of the last E34s ever produced.

What about a M62 replacement engine? I was wondering about this very thing. My '94 had the Nikasil engine replaced in '96 by BMW. My uncle said it was a '96 motor.
The last time I had her in for an oil change, they had to go find a different filter as the '94 filter from the book didn't match.

The M60 Nikisal engines that were replaced with Alusil (by BMW)...received the M60 B40 or M60 B30 Alusil engine block...NOT the M62 Alusil engines (even if it was 1996) ;)
(this applies to the e34s imported to the USA...I'm not sure what happened in other markets)
And as far as the oil filter...when you look at the parts diagram (ETK or RealOEM.com)...you'll see that for cars with a 9/95-up prod date...there is an alternate oil filter: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE23&mospid=47406&btnr=11_1090&hg=11&fg=30&hl=12
So if you originally had an M60 engine produced prior to 9/95...then replaced it with an engine after 9/95...you may have gotten an engine that has an oil reservoir with the "modified dome" which requires the different oil filter. ;)

That is because they put in the plastic stalk that they used in E39 engine. Everyone with V8 should use that stalk and use newer filters as they designed it so that the engine will not have loss of oil pressure during startup.
I know I got that in my car too. As for your engine, you really need to check the engine block number.

In additon, the M62 was OBD-II.

No the Olympic was model year 1995, there were no US E34 1996, (if the cars had been sold else were they had been 1996 MY)
Europe and South-Africa got real E34 MY 1996, (I owned 2 of 46 made LHD 540i/6 Limo for two years, now I have one) SA even built E34 Limousine in January 1996!
In Europe the production of E39 started the Autumn of 1995 (pre series cars spring 1995), a Swedish press 528i was built 9/95 the same month as my 1996M-Sport pack E34, last E34: s to leave the production line was Touring: s built in 6/96, here is the last 540iT/6 http://www.autopower.se/galleriet/bloggbilder/00006401_s640.jpg from 1996-06-04 of course with a M60B40 under the hood

You have no idea how impressed I am with the quality and amount of replies in this thread...
Well I guess the answer is no...
BUT how about this for a debate...
Could an M62 4.4 NON-Vanos be fitted to an E34 with relative ease?
AND how common are the 6-speed manual transmissions for them?

The M62 engines for example have a completely different engine management compared to our older models. For example in the E38 the I-bus system is used.
Mechanicalwise installation might not be the problem, but the engine wiring looms and management.
But nothing is impossible.
6-speed transmission was a standard optional on the E38 in Europe.

well this begs the question....
If I were to get my hands on the engine complete with ECU and wiring loom.. what else would I need to get her going?

started with a E34 530/540
The engine bay would take the new motor a lot easier.
brakes, ABS pump Etc.
A whole donor car is good to have around for those odd items that always hold you back.

Well I would be looking for a whole E39 to use as a mechanical doner (the car itself will probably be a crash/write off type of thing)
Most other parts which will be needed I could most likely source from breakers if needed...
Im picking up some 540 brakes next week..
All in all... would it be worth using an M60 instead? the torque isnt quite as high but Im sure a little tewaking would help that?

An m62 swap has been done before. It was sold on eBay about year ago, it had a huge write up and many many pics.
But it makes you think, if it's being sold..... what was wrong.
