540i 6Sp Shift Bush

Hi Guys,

I have a 95 E34 540 6Sp, 227k.

On doing a bit of a routine inspection of all underside systems I noticed significant slop in a strut bush.

There is a strut going from the top of the gearbox around the shift lever and back onto the body through a small balljoint.

This joint is knackered.

It looks from parts catalogue as if this bush is about $15 and bolts onto the body.

Has anybody changed this? Is it possible to do it from inside the car or does the propshaft/gearbox need to come out?

Any ideas appreciated!

It is not too bad. The nylon bushing sits in the shifter cup grappling the shifter ball. It is locked in place by a little twist. When you get the new part it should be apparent to you. To remove you need to work from under to twist the nylon bushing to pop it out.

I just replaced my tranny and say that under there. The heat shield will probably need to be taken out, which needs the exhaust un hooked.

You might be able to wiggle in there with out taking it off, but it is really tight.

It can be done without removing much of anything, but you'll have to lower the transmission to pop the bitch clip (#12 on your diagram) so that you can remove the shift console (called the shift arm, #2). You could also attempt working it off without removing the console.

There's a nut that secures the bushing to the chassis, and you will need to maneuver around the aluminum heat shielding to gain access to it.

If that rear bushing is bad, chances are the rest of the shifter's bushings are gone, too. Might want to rebuild the whole thing.
