e46 3 series brake pads

help please. ok guys I know its not an e34 not even a 5 eries but my mate had just rang me trying to install new BM pads at the rear. the front were fine but the rears he believes are too big. he says that the pistons are pushed as far as they can go and the pads wont fit. ideas please and qualified opinions. many thanks

a little late but he needs to take the carrier apart for the pads to fit the rotor and then re-assemble.
